BIG ADVENTURES, small footprint

Our Responsible & Sustainable Travel Initiatives

Since our first trek in Nepal in 1975, leaving minimal impact in the places we visit by travelling under our own steam has been at the very heart of our active travel philosophy.

Our sustainable travel practices and commitment to support local communities at every level of the operation continues to underpin the way in which we create our innovative adventures.

The natural environments that we travel to are fragile and abundant with precious culture and traditions that are often reliant on tourism. We have a responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence, protect what is delicate and where we can, leave a positive influence.

Creating genuine and sustainable itineraries often translates to real costs, with a host of responsible travel practices that underpin our prices.

By integrating these practices into our in-country operations we’re aiming for a style of travel that makes the world a better place.

From selecting our campsites, ensuring a Leave No Trace policy, removing litter through our 10 Pieces Litter Collection initiative, supporting our porters and mule drivers and giving back to local communities through our Community Project Travel program, World Expeditions is committed to true sustainable travel.

We continually collaborate and seek guidance from a range of expert organisations, including World Animal Protection, ReThink Orphanages, 10 Pieces, South Pole Group, Leave No Trace, World Peace Tours and the International Porter Protection Group. This ensures that our travel philosophy and in-field operations reflect up-to-date sustainable practices.

Our positive environmental impact

Ways we support local communities

Our philanthropic arm

Watch our responsible travel initiatives in action in Nepal and Peru:

Packing a suitcase and heading off to unknown lands satisfies our urge to take a break from our everyday routine, discover new cultures, reconnect with nature, stretch our boundaries, relax and unwind and then return to our lives feeling refreshed. But there’s more to travel these days. Today, travel also affords us with the opportunity to: - protect the environment - contribute to communities in need - advocate against animal cruelty - take action to protect vulnerable children - support sustainable development and preserve - the world’s many rich and diverse cultures By travelling responsibly, we can return to our lives feeling satisfied that our travels have left a positive impact. World Expeditions has been creating innovative adventure itineraries since 1975. Our commitment to sustainable travel was formed when the company was first established, and today, in the face of a multitude of threats to the environment and societies, our commitment is stronger than ever. Creating genuine sustainable adventure itineraries often translates to real costs, which means that a raft of responsible tourism practises underpins our prices. By integrating these practices into our itineraries we enable our travellers to be ‘responsible travellers’. Conserving environments and cultures takes a united front, which is why we produce this Responsible Travel Guidebook. It’s a reference tool for our travel industry partners, employees and travellers, outlining our company wide initiatives, and it gives guidance to travellers about how to be ‘responsible travellers’. Responsible Travel has been at the heart of World Expeditions ever since our inception over 40 years ago. It really is the element of our company that drives most of our decisions whether it’s operating in the field or employing staff, we’re always thinking about what we can give back. From selecting our campsites, ensuring a Leave No Trace policy, removing litter through our 10 Pieces Litter Collection initiative, supporting our porters and mule drivers and giving back to local communities through our Community Project Travel program, World Expeditions is committed to true sustainable travel. Learn more at Porters are an integral part of the World Expeditions philosophy and style of travel. We take our travellers off-the-beaten track, avoiding the congested trails, to experience remote tent-based adventures … this style of trekking is enabled by porters. Porters are as important to us as our travellers. Without them, we would not be able to run our quality programs. When we trek, the entire group - travellers, guides and porters alike - are a team who share the same needs for safety in the mountain environment. Check out what benefits we provide our porters to ensure their safety, welfare and wellbeing. World Expeditions is proud to be the founding partner of the 10 Pieces initiative and we're thrilled to be inviting World Expeditions travellers to play a part in the solution to the global problem of litter. Find out at On treks in the Annapurna and Everest regions as well as a selection of treks in Bhutan travellers can now volunteer to participate in 10 Pieces. We’ll alert you to the opportunity before departure, when you can volunteer to participate. In the village of Huilloc, in the Sacred Valley in Peru, over 200 households are using traditional open fire cook stoves that produce a toxic smoke contributing to the incidence of low birth weight in babies as well as pneumonia, pulmonary disease and bronchitis in the children and woman who spend approximately eight hours a day in the kitchen. Help us make Huilloc kitchens smoke free!! Join our 13 day community project trip, add the 4 day extension to your Peru adventure or donate to the World Expeditions Foundation. Learn more at Imagine if you could do something extraordinary for the planet by simply picking up 10 pieces of litter on your travels. World Expeditions is the founding partner of a simple but effective litter collection initiative that harnesses the collective power of travellers to keep wilderness trails free of litter. Already in place on our guided treks in Nepal, Bhutan and on Mount Rinjani in Indonesia, you can now do your bit to make the world a better place by volunteering for 10 Pieces on our Peru treks. Learn more at In the remote village of Ghandruk in the Kaski district of Annapurna Region there was a great need for an improved medical centre. The only medical service available to this village and the local area is a simple sub-health post providing only the basic facilities. The attendant had rudimentary training and was only able to dispense a small number of very basic medications. Any condition requiring serious medical attention meant that the patient had to walk or be carried 7 hours across rugged terrain, followed by a 45 Km drive to the nearest hospital in Pokhara. It is no surprise that there are many stories of people dying before they can receive treatment. After consulting with the Ghandruk village elders and obtaining endorsement from government officials, Bir Singh Gurung, a local Nepalese trekking and expedition leader with World Expeditions, Sanjiwani-_Nepal-smalldecided that this community of 5872 people would benefit greatly from an improved healthcare facility. Two groups of World Expeditions travellers visited the village to assist in the construction works. Group 1 arrived in Ghandruk in October 2011 and assisted with the renovation and extension of an existing building. Group 2 arrived in April 2012 to complete the renovation of the medical clinic including repairing the windows, doors, painting the walls, upgrading the furniture and fixtures and building a compound wall. Impact: The previous medical facility was too small to the extent that they could not keep patients in overnight. The results of the 2 groups that worked at the Sanjiwani Public Health Mission was that the health mission could move to a bigger premises with new and improved conditions for medical care.

The Thoughtful Traveller booklet

The Thoughtful Traveller booklet
Conserving environments and cultures requires a united front with our industry partners, travellers, guides and staff. This is why we originally developed our award-winning Responsible Travel Guidebook which presented our comprehensive policies on sustainable travel.

The guidebook has since evolved into
The Thoughtful Traveller booklet, an easy to read document that empowers travellers with ideas on how they can be part of the solution and collectively change the world through their travels for good.

Watch The Thoughtful Traveller Q&A online

In March 2018, we gathered a panel of experts to discuss the merits and challenges of various topics related to Responsible Travel at our Thoughtful Traveller Q&A, which you can watch in full below.

On 14 March 2018, we gathered a panel of experts in our Sydney office to address responsible travel topics including: ethical voluntourism, working conditions for porters in Nepal, voluntourism and why travellers should think twice before visiting an orphanage overseas. Following a question and answer style format, the panellists took questions from the audience, as well as from a survey we ran to collect questions from those who couldn’t make the Sydney event, to help educate, inform and highlight the importance of travelling responsibly. Responsible Travel has always been at the forefront of World Expeditions' travel philosophy since we began walking holidays back in 1975. If you're passionate about matters such as conserving the environment, animal welfare or preserving the culture of local communities you should watch this important discussion. ____________________ The panellists: Environmental sustainability | Tom Schroder, South Pole: Do travellers have a role to play in slowing down the impact of Global Warming? Child- safe tourism | Leigh Mathews, ReThink Orphanages: Why do well-meaning Australian travellers need to think twice about supporting or visiting an orphanage? Animal friendly tourism | Ben Pearson, World Animal Protection: Why should travellers protect the welfare of vulnerable animals used in the tourism industry? Equity and rights for overseas tourism staff | Tim Macartney-Snape, two-time Mount Everest summiteer: Whether your aiming for the summit of Mount Everest or simply Everest Base Camp, it is all made possible because of mountain porters. How can travellers ensure that mountain porters’ working conditions are suitable? Voluntourism | Sue Badyari, World Expeditions: When is voluntourism mutually beneficial to travellers and the host community and when does it do more damage. Is there a future for this kind of tourism. Litter minimisation and management | Lisa Vitaris, 10 Pieces: Can we harness the collective power of travellers via a simple litter collection campaign to change the littering mentality of developing nations? Travel as a catalyst for peace | Gail Parsonage, International Institute for Peace through Tourism: Can travellers be ambassadors for global peace?
