In cities and larger towns across the Middle East, you stay in carefully selected 3 to 4 star properties chosen for their comfort, character and consistent reliability.

Hotels are typically centrally located or well positioned for easy access to historic quarters, markets and key cultural sites. Each property has a proven track record of strong traveller satisfaction and dependable service standards.

In smaller towns, accommodation may be simpler and represent the best available option for the location. On rare occasions, shared bathroom facilities may apply.

Bedouin Camps

In desert regions of North Africa and the Middle East, you may stay in permanent Bedouin style camps that reflect traditional design and desert living.

Accommodation is in canvas tents inspired by Bedouin heritage, often furnished with simple beds and regional décor. Facilities are practical, and bathroom amenities may be basic due to limited water availability in remote desert environments. Power is typically available only at set times, usually supplied by generator.

At night, kerosene lanterns or candlelight create a warm, atmospheric setting beneath expansive desert skies, enhancing the sense of place in these remote landscapes.

Camping

Camping in the Middle East and North Africa involves travelling with mobile tented accommodation, allowing you to stay in remote desert and wilderness settings.

Depending on the trip style, you may sleep in larger dome tents or smaller trekking tents. On fully supported departures, your local crew erects and dismantles camp each day. On limited participation trips, you may be asked to assist with setting up your tent. Shared camp infrastructure includes a dining tent, kitchen setup and a toilet tent.

Bathroom facilities are shared, and in very remote areas bush toileting may occasionally be required. These camping adventures feature in our Classic Adventures range.

Holding a degree in English Literature and Languages he speaks fluent English, French and Arabic. From Cairo to the Cape and beyond, Gus’ travels have taken her to the roof of Africa (Kilimanjaro), the ‘Big 5’ in South Africa, Tanzania's annual migration, Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Rwanda's Mountain Gorillas, Namibia, Zanzibar’s beaches, majestic Victoria Falls, Morocco, Turkey, Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Oman and Jordan. Gus’ usual mode of transport is her own two feet, so don’t be surprised if you see her out on an African trail sometime.

Dr Anderson lives with his wife in a small town near the Lakes District in the north of England. He is a family doctor and spends much of his spare time travelling as an expedition doctor. He has more than 10 years of altitude and travel medicine experience. Previous treks and expeditions have focused on the Himalayas, with others in the Scandinavian Arctic and mountainous areas of Africa. He also enjoys trail running, cycling and open-water swimming.
