On The Couch with Simon Yates

Internationally acclaimed mountaineer Simon is one of Britain’s most prolific and accomplished exploratory mountaineers, best known for his role in Joe Simpson’s book and the subsequent film, ‘Touching the Void’.

He’s travelled and climbed some of the most remote locations –from the icy landscapes of Alaska, to the depths of the Antarctic, setting the bar in mountaineering with a number of first ascents in Peru, Chile, Pakistan, Greenland and Kazakhstan.

This week Simon takes us on a journey through his history in mountaineering, including his highlights, upcoming expeditions and why the mountains resonate so deeply with him!

Simon, why do you climb mountains?
I get great satisfaction from the mental and physical challenge that the mountain environment provides. Through this I feel an intense reconnection with the natural world – a world that we are distanced and cosseted from in developed countries.

You’ve been climbing for over 3 decades and have conquered a number of peaks around the world. What’s your favourite trip and why?|
Hard to chose – My early trips to Pakistan back in the 1980’s were great fun with close friends and more recently I have been enjoying the wilderness experience of the mountains of Tierra del Fuego.

You’re about to lead a trip up Ojos Del Salado, the world's highest active volcano at 6,893m in November this year. How do you train for such a big climb?
I do 3 or 4 expeditions spread through an average year so I never really lose fitness. I live next to The Lake District when at home in the UK, so I have a fantastic outdoor playground on my doorstep also.

What are you most excited about with the Ojos del Salado climb?
The fact that it’s the biggest Volcano is the big draw for me and Chile is one of my favourite countries to visit.

What lessons has mountaineering taught you that you apply to other areas of your life?
Mountaineering is no different really. You have to get out of bed in the morning and get on with it – life is a gift and very short.
