LEVEL 1: Discovery and Cruising These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity and are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures do not go above 2500m and rarely involve camping. * Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2 -3 months prior to departure.

Overview

This Amazon rainforest adventure takes you deep into the Tambopata Reserve, one of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet. Based at a remote jungle lodge, you explore rainforest trails, rivers and lagoons with expert naturalist guides, maximising opportunities to spot wildlife.

The reserve is renowned for its exceptional birdlife, butterfly populations and abundance of mammals including monkeys, caimans and giant river otters. Travelling by boat and canoe offers a peaceful way to observe the jungle from a different perspective.

Combining comfort, education and immersion, this short journey offers a genuine introduction to the Amazon and its remarkable ecosystems. (Note: A 4 day option is also available.)

On arrival in Puerto Maldonado, you’re met and transferred to the lodge office to store main luggage before continuing into the rainforest. A river journey by open launch takes you deep into the jungle, offering excellent opportunities to spot birds along the riverbanks and canopy. Depending on lodge location, you may also walk to Lake Sandoval and paddle by canoe across its calm waters. Later, enjoy a guided forest walk and an evening briefing with resident naturalists before settling in for your first night surrounded by jungle sounds. Accommodation: Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion or similar NOTE: It is important to be aware that the lodges are comfortable but basic - only some of the lodges have electricity or hot water for a few hours a day. Please note that due to demand it is sometimes necessary to use an alternative lodge in this area. While staying at the jungle lodge you may be with other people from other operators worldwide in a group. IMPORTANT: The evening before you fly to Puerto Maldonado, please be sure to re-pack your luggage for the jungle. Dependent on your accommodation in the jungle the luggage policy differs. Please see pre-departure information (under 'luggage') for more details.

Today is dedicated to exploring the rainforest by foot and water. Guided walks reveal monkeys, capybaras, insects and medicinal plants, while canoe trips across jungle lagoons offer chances to spot caimans and birdlife. An optional canopy walk provides a rare perspective from the treetops, where the forest canopy comes alive with movement and sound. After dark, a short river excursion may reveal nocturnal wildlife as the rainforest transforms for the night. Accommodation: Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion or similar PLEASE NOTE: The program may vary according to flight schedules, weather, river height, group sizes, etc and participants should be aware there is no guarantee of seeing specific animals or birds and in general you may not see much wildlife since the rainforest provides such good camouflage for its inhabitants - but you will have a good chance to experience true Amazon rainforest first hand.

Deep within the heart of the Amazon – where the story of Inkaterra first began – lays Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, located between the Tambopata National Reserve and the shores of the Madre de Dios River. 25 private cabanas sitting majestically on stilts and a 5-room casa grande with high ceilings and a rustic thatched roof are peppered around the property.

Is the departure confirmed?

Guaranteed to go This departure has reached its minimum number and will run.
It is the point travellers should wait for before booking any non-refundable flights.

Close to guaranteed This appears only when a date is close to reaching minimum numbers. If it shows 1 or 2 to guaranteed, book as a pair on a date needing two and it reaches its minimum. Your booking confirms the date for everybody already booked.

How full is the date I am looking at?

Space is filling or Space is filling fast This date has bookings and places are still open. Filling fast means limited spots available, so don't leave your decision too late.

If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings.

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?

Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or in many cases, just for the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.

Accommodation is in comfortable but simple jungle lodges set deep within the rainforest. Rooms are private and designed to blend into the natural environment. Some lodges have limited electricity and hot water, often available only for a few hours each day.

The Tambopata Reserve is one of the most wildlife-rich areas in the Amazon, offering excellent chances to see monkeys, birds, butterflies and reptiles. However, wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, as animals roam freely and use the forest’s natural camouflage.

Activities include guided rainforest walks, canoeing on jungle lagoons, river journeys by boat and optional canopy walks. Night excursions may also take place to search for nocturnal wildlife.
