Overview

Manaslu (8167m) is the 8th highest mountain in the world and it is only in recent years that trekkers have begun to explore this rugged area. Trekking around Manaslu offers awesome mountain views, remote Buddhist villages close to the Tibetan border and cultural and geographic diversity that rivals any other trek in the Himalaya. The trek commences amidst the terraced fields and sub-tropical forests of the foothills. Climbing north, the landscape gradually transforms into the arid, high altitude landscapes associated with Tibetan culture. Traversing to the north of Manaslu, with time to visit the Base Camp that is used by expeditions, is a highlight of this trek. Beyond Manaslu, the climb continues until we reach the majestic Larkya La, which affords outstanding views in every direction of the Himalaya. After crossing the pass, we complete this rewarding circuit of Manaslu in the bustling villages of the Annapurna region.

You will be met at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport arrivals gate by a World Expeditions representative and transferred to the Radisson Hotel in a private vehicle. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to relax after your journey or explore the surrounding area at your own pace. A pre-trek briefing will be held at 4:30pm–5:00pm, where your guide will outline the journey ahead and organise the distribution of your trekking kit, including your kit bag, sleeping bag and down or fibrefill jacket. This evening, we gather for a welcome group dinner, providing a great opportunity to meet your fellow travellers before the adventure begins. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: Nil

Today you have a full day to explore Kathmandu’s vibrant streets and cultural landmarks. You may wish to visit two of the city’s most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Pashupatinath, Nepal’s most sacred Hindu temple and an important cremation site, and Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal and the most sacred Tibetan Buddhist shrine outside of Tibet. Alternatively, you may prefer to wander through the markets and shops of the lively Thamel district or explore other historic sites such as Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple), perched on a hilltop overlooking the city. The beautifully preserved plazas of Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Kathmandu Durbar Square are also remarkable places to experience the rich cultural heritage and architecture of the Kathmandu Valley. Today also provides time for final trek preparations before the journey into the Himalaya begins. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: B

Today we leave Kathmandu and travel west toward Pokhara, following a winding road that climbs over the rim of the valley before descending to the banks of the Trisuli River. The drive offers a fascinating glimpse into rural Nepal as we pass through small towns, terraced farmland and traditional villages. After crossing the Trisuli River, the road continues through scenic countryside with occasional views of the Ganesh Himal and Shringi Himal ranges appearing on the horizon. As we move deeper into the hills, the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous and remote. By late afternoon we arrive at the small riverside village of Liding, where we set up camp above the river and prepare for the beginning of our trekking adventure. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Liding

Meals: B,L,D

Today we begin our trek by following a trail that gradually winds its way upstream along the Buri Gandaki River. The path undulates through forested hillsides, with a series of gentle climbs and descents as we make our way deeper into the valley. By midday we descend to a broad sandy riverbed where we stop for lunch beside the river. After our break, the trail continues along a scenic mountain path high above the water, offering lovely views of the valley below. Along the way we cross several suspension bridges and pass through small settlements before reaching the village of Khorlabesi, where we set up camp for the night. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Khorla Bensi

Meals: B,L,D

We begin our gradual walk along the banks of the Budi Gandaki River and before long reach one of the trail’s most memorable features, a waterfall cascading directly onto the path. Depending on conditions, we may need to put on rain gear or briefly remove our boots to pass through comfortably, with our experienced staff on hand to assist throughout. After approximately one and a half hours of walking, we pass a natural hot spring before crossing a suspension bridge to the small settlement of Dovan. From here, we continue with a steady climb to our lunch stop before ascending further to our peaceful campsite beside the Yaru River at Yaru Phant. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Yaru Phant

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast, we cross the Yaru River on a suspension bridge, joining the route used by trekkers coming from the Ganesh Himal trail. Following damage caused by the 2015 earthquake and changes to the river course, a remarkable cantilever bridge was constructed along the cliffside, creating one of the day’s most memorable sections of trail. A second suspension bridge leads us into Jagat village, the official entry point into the restricted area where our special permits come into effect. The morning walk is relatively gentle, and we stop for lunch in the charming village of Sirdibas. In the afternoon, the trail climbs gradually with increasingly impressive mountain views, including our first clear glimpses of Shringi Himal. After crossing another long suspension bridge, we continue to the beautiful village of Philim before a final gentle walk brings us to our campsite at Lamo Chautara. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Lamo Chautara

Meals: B,L,D

Today brings a long but rewarding day of walking through a dramatic narrow valley. The trail undulates pleasantly with sweeping views across the gorge and past cascading waterfalls before reaching the junction where the route separates, with the Manaslu Circuit trail heading left and the Tsum Valley trail continuing right. From here, we descend into lush forest alongside the river, crossing a series of suspension bridges as we make our way to the village of Pewa for lunch. In the afternoon, the trail ascends gradually through the village of Deng before continuing deeper into the valley to the quiet settlement of Behi Phedi. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Behi Phedi

Meals: B,L,D

Today the trail climbs steadily before descending to cross a suspension bridge to the opposite bank of the Buri Gandaki River. As we continue along the valley, the landscape and culture begin to change, with mani walls and chortens appearing along the trail, signalling our gradual entry into a region strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhist culture. The path follows the northern bank of the river below the village of Bihi, known for its family of skilled stone carvers. Along the trail we see beautifully carved flat stones engraved with intricate figures and small stupas, while the peaks of Shringi Himal begin to emerge above the valley. Continuing along the river, we reach the traditional Tibetan-style village of Ghap for lunch before climbing gradually through forests of pine and birch. By late afternoon we arrive near Namrung, where our camp is set amongst the trees on the edge of the village. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Namrung

Meals: B,L,D

Today we descend to cross the Damonan Khola before beginning a steady ascent along a narrow forest trail toward Namru. The path winds through beautiful woodland and past small Tibetan-influenced villages as we gradually gain altitude into the alpine valley. Along the trail we may encounter yak caravans, still an important form of transport in this remote mountain region. As we gain height, the scenery opens dramatically with expansive views of the Ganesh Himal and Baudha Himal ranges behind us, while the Kutang Himal forms a natural border between Nepal and Tibet to the north. Ahead, the valley reveals its first great Himalayan panorama, including Himalchuli (7,893m / 25,896ft), Peak 29 / Ngadi Chuli (7,871m / 25,823ft) and Manaslu (8,163m / 26,781ft) dominating the skyline. By afternoon we arrive at Shyala, where we establish camp surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on the trek. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Shyala

Meals: B,L,D

Today we make a rewarding side trip to Pungen Gompa, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Manaslu Circuit. The walk from Shyala takes around three to four hours and provides exceptional views of the surrounding mountains. The first section follows a gradual ascent along a wide alpine trail. As we gain height, the valley opens dramatically and the peaks surrounding Manaslu (8,163m / 26,781ft) dominate the skyline. At the high point of the trail we pass a mani wall decorated with colourful prayer flags before descending gently into a beautiful glacial valley leading to Pungen Gompa. Set beneath towering Himalayan peaks near the base of Mt Manaslu, this peaceful monastery is an important spiritual site for the local Nubri people. After time to explore the monastery and enjoy the dramatic mountain scenery, we settle into camp in this remarkable alpine setting. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Pungen Gompa

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a well-earned rest and acclimatisation day in the spectacular alpine setting of Pungen Gompa. There is time to explore the surrounding area at your own pace, with opportunities to walk towards nearby glaciers and alpine lakes while enjoying uninterrupted mountain scenery. The camp enjoys panoramic views of Mt Manaslu, Nadi Himal, Himal Chuli and numerous surrounding peaks, making this an exceptional location for photography and relaxation. There is also time to rest, dry gear, catch up on laundry or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remarkable Himalayan valley. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Pungen Gompa

Meals: B,L,D

Today begins with a descent toward the Pungen Khola, crossing to the opposite side of the valley before continuing across open alpine terrain surrounded by mountain scenery. After around an hour of walking, we reach a beautiful flat pasture before continuing toward the picturesque village of Samagaon. One of the main settlements in the upper Nubri Valley, Samagaon offers a fascinating glimpse into local life, with traditional stone houses, prayer wheels and strong Tibetan cultural influences. After time to explore the village, we continue on a short walk to our nearby campsite at Kermo Kharka. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Kermo Kharka

Meals: B,L,D

Today is an important acclimatisation day, allowing our bodies time to adjust to the increasing altitude before continuing higher on the trek. Spending an additional night at Kermo Kharka (3,500m / 11,483ft) improves our chances of comfortably progressing through the higher sections ahead. For those feeling energetic, there is an optional hike towards Manaslu Base Camp. The trail climbs gradually beneath Manaslu (8,163m / 26,781ft), offering dramatic views of glaciers, alpine lakes and surrounding Himalayan peaks. Depending on conditions, there may be sections of snow along the route. Those preferring a more relaxed day may enjoy a shorter walk to the Birendra Lake viewpoint before returning to camp for a hot lunch and further rest ahead of the pass crossing. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Kermo Kharka

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a shorter and more relaxed day as we follow the valley gradually upward toward the village of Samdo (3,875m / 12,713ft). Surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, Samdo is one of the highest permanent settlements in the region and offers a fascinating insight into traditional Tibetan-influenced mountain life. Beyond Samdo, a gentle and mostly flat walk of around 40 minutes brings us to our campsite at Larke Bazaar, arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon is free to relax or enjoy an optional hike toward the old trade route leading to the Tibetan border, offering a glimpse into the region’s historic trading connections. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Larke Bazaar

Meals: B,L,D

This morning’s walk is truly spectacular, with breathtaking mountain views accompanying us throughout the day. Mt Naike, Manaslu North and Larke Peak dominate the skyline, becoming increasingly dramatic as we steadily gain altitude toward Dharmasala. The higher elevation may slow our pace slightly, allowing more time to appreciate the extraordinary scenery surrounding us. This section is also one of the finest wildlife corridors on the route, with Himalayan blue sheep, marmots, pikas and wild dogs occasionally spotted along the trail. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Larke Phedi / Dharmasala

Meals: B,L,D

Today is one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the trek as we cross the Larkya La Pass. Soon after setting off, the distinctive shape of Larkya Peak comes into view as we steadily climb toward the pass. Although the gradient is gradual for much of the ascent, the high altitude requires a slow and steady pace, with the climb to the pass usually taking around five hours. The final approach becomes steeper, but the effort is rewarded with extraordinary Himalayan views including Himlung Himal (7,126m / 23,379ft), Gyaji Kang (7,074m / 23,209ft), Kang Guru (6,981m / 22,903ft), Annapurna II (7,937m / 26,040ft) and surrounding peaks. From the pass, we begin a long and often steep descent across sections of ice, moraine and scree, following the edge of the glacier with careful footing required throughout. By late afternoon we reach the beautiful alpine valley of Bhimtang, surrounded by towering peaks after an exhilarating day in the high mountains. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Bhimtang

Meals: B,L,D

Today we begin our descent as the trail follows the Marsyangdi River downstream through a beautiful mountain valley. Gradually leaving the high alpine terrain behind, the path enters pristine forests of pine and rhododendron, which are especially colourful during the spring flowering season. Along the way there are still impressive mountain views, with Himlung Himal (7,126m / 23,379ft) and Manaslu (8,163m / 26,781ft) rising above the valleys behind us. By afternoon we arrive at the small village of Goa, where we establish camp and enjoy the warmer air of the lower valley. Accommodation: Wilderness Camp Goa

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast, we begin the final walk of the trek, descending through forest and small villages toward Dharapani. The trail offers pleasant walking with views along the Marsyangdi Valley and across cultivated farmland. After around three to four hours we reach Dharapani, where we meet our vehicle and begin the drive down the valley toward Besisahar. The journey follows the winding road along the Marsyangdi River through rural villages and terraced hillsides. By late afternoon we arrive at Besisahar, the administrative centre of the Lamjung District. Accommodation: Hotel in Besisahar

Meals: B,L,D

Drive to Kathmandu (1,330m / 4,364ft, drive 5–6 hrs) After breakfast, we begin the drive back to Kathmandu, travelling along the scenic highway through the valleys and hills of central Nepal. Joining the main Kathmandu–Pokhara Highway at Dumre, the journey passes through lively roadside towns, terraced farmland and river valleys, offering a final glimpse of rural Nepal after our time in the mountains. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, the remainder of the day is free to relax, enjoy a hot shower or explore the nearby streets and cafés. This evening, we highly recommend heading out for a celebratory group dinner, reflecting on the incredible journey through the Manaslu region. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: B,L
