Overview

Experience the Annapurna Circuit the way few ever do, away from the crowds and deep into the quieter corners of the Himalaya. This remote version of the Annapurna Circuit is a considered reimagining of one of Nepal’s most iconic treks, shaped by our long-standing commitment to responsible travel and exploring paths less travelled.

While the classic Annapurna Circuit has become increasingly busy, this itinerary avoids the road-accessed sections and instead detours through the secluded valleys of Nar and Phu. These ancient Tibetan enclaves, only opened to trekkers in recent decades, remain far removed from the main trail. Here, chortens, mani walls and prayer flags mark your passage through high altitude settlements, offering a genuine insight into a traditional and deeply spiritual way of life.

The route leads you through dramatic alpine landscapes as you cross the lesser known Kang La Pass (5,320m / 17,454ft) before rejoining the Annapurna Circuit to traverse the renowned Thorong La Pass (5,416m / 17,769ft). These crossings are highlights in every sense, delivering expansive mountain views and the reward of a true wilderness journey. From here, the descent takes you into the windswept Mustang region and the Kali Gandaki, one of the deepest gorges on earth, framed by the towering peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

This is more than an alternative Annapurna Circuit route. It reflects how trekking in Nepal can be approached, with a focus on low impact travel, strong local involvement and meaningful cultural connection. For over 50 years, World Expeditions has been pioneering trekking experiences in Nepal that extend beyond the standard routes. A fully supported camping based approach allows greater flexibility, consistent comfort and a closer connection with your trekking crew, while also supporting more local employment in remote communities.

You will be guided by experienced local leaders trained in wilderness first aid, with safety supported through a well paced acclimatisation schedule and comprehensive medical equipment, including a Portable Altitude Chamber. The trek includes all meals, unlimited boiled water and a quality Trek Pack with a down jacket, sleeping bag and kit bag, reducing the need for additional gear. Our Porter Policy ensures your support crew are properly equipped, fairly paid and well cared for.

If you are looking for an Annapurna Circuit experience that retains the scale and diversity of the Himalaya while avoiding the busiest sections and adds a genuine sense of exploration, this route offers a more considered way to complete the journey.

Itinerary

You will be met at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport arrivals gate by a World Expeditions representative and transferred to the Radisson Hotel in a private vehicle. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to relax after your journey or explore the surrounding area at your own pace. A pre-trek briefing will be held at approximately 4:30–5:00 pm, where your guide will outline the journey ahead and organise the distribution of your trekking kit including your kit bag, sleeping bag and down or fibrefill jacket. This evening we gather for a welcome group dinner, providing a great opportunity to meet your fellow travellers before the adventure begins. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: Nil

We set off early this morning, travelling by private vehicle for 6–7 hours along the Kathmandu–Pokhara highway before turning north at Dumre to follow the dramatic Marsyangdi Valley. We stop for lunch in the riverside town of Besi Sahar (820 m / 2,690 ft), where we transfer to 4WD jeeps for the final stage of the journey. From here the drive becomes more adventurous, taking 4–5 hours along rugged mountain roads that follow sections of the original Annapurna Circuit trail. The route winds through narrow gorges, waterfalls and traditional hillside villages, including Taal, the first village of the Manang District. While the road can be rough in places, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as we enter the high Himalayan valleys. Upon arrival in Koto, we meet our local trekking crew and complete final preparations before beginning our trek. Accommodation: Lodge Koto

Meals: B,L,D

Before departing, our local leader ensures that our restricted area permits are checked and endorsed. Leaving the main Annapurna Circuit trail, we enter the remote and less-travelled Nar Phu Valley, following a scenic path through pine and fir forests along the Nar Khola. The trail winds steadily through forested terrain and narrow sections of valley as we make our way deeper into this secluded region. We stop for lunch at Odar, a small clearing beside the river, before continuing toward our campsite. By afternoon we arrive at Forest Camp (Upper Koto Camp) at around 2,950 m, a peaceful campsite set among tall forest with impressive views toward Annapurna II (7,932 m / 26,024 ft). Accommodation: Camping Forest Camp (Upper Koto Camp)

Meals: B,L,D

We continue our ascent into the remote Nar Phu Valley, crossing suspension bridges and trekking through narrow gorges carved by the Nar Khola. The landscape gradually opens as we gain altitude, revealing dramatic cliffs and expansive mountain scenery. After passing the small settlement of Dharapani (not to be confused with the village of the same name on the Annapurna Circuit), we reach Meta, a windswept plateau offering impressive views of Kang Guru (6,981 m / 22,904 ft). Colourful prayer flags flutter in the wind here, reflecting the strong Buddhist culture of this isolated region. From Meta the trail continues gradually toward Nar Phedi, a quiet riverside location that serves as an important stopping point before reaching Nar village. Accommodation: Lodge Nar Phedi

Meals: B,L,D

Today we trek deeper into the Nar Phu Valley, following a scenic trail that passes former Khampa settlements such as Chyakhu and Kyang, reminders of the region’s historical Tibetan influence. The valley opens gradually as we gain elevation, revealing dramatic alpine landscapes and traditional stone dwellings. The final section involves a gentle climb to Nar Village, one of the highest permanent settlements in this remote Himalayan region. Surrounded by high peaks and windswept terrain, Nar retains a strong Tibetan cultural character. In the afternoon there is time to explore the village, visit the local gompa, and enjoy views toward Pisang Peak (6,091 m / 19,984 ft) and the surrounding mountains. Accommodation: Lodge Nar Village

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a scheduled contingency day in Nar Village, built into the itinerary to allow flexibility in the event of delays earlier in the trek. If the journey is running on schedule, this day may be used later in the itinerary where needed. Set high in the remote Nar Phu Valley, Nar offers impressive views of surrounding peaks and a strong sense of traditional Himalayan culture. If the day is not required for contingency, there may be time to further explore the village, visit the local monastery, or enjoy short walks to nearby viewpoints. Accommodation: Lodge Nar Village

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a comparatively short stage designed to assist with further acclimatisation before crossing the Kang La. The trail climbs steadily from Nar Village, passing through sparse alpine terrain of juniper scrub and high-altitude pasture as we ascend toward our campsite. Our camp at Kang La Base Camp sits high beneath the pass and offers magnificent views of the Damodar Range to the north. To the southwest, the snow-covered peaks of the Annapurna Range dominate the skyline. The thin vegetation and rugged alpine landscape leave little doubt that we are now camping close to 5,000 metres in the high Himalaya. Accommodation: Camping Kang La Base Camp

Meals: B,L,D

The Kang La is not an especially difficult pass and the climb to the summit usually takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on conditions and snow cover. Setting out early allows us to fully enjoy the spectacular views as they unfold around us. From the top, the panorama is truly memorable. The snowy peaks of the Annapurna Range stretch across the western horizon, Thorong La lies to the north and the valleys of Nar Phu fall away behind us. Standing on the pass we are rewarded with sweeping views across the Upper Manang Valley, with its scattered villages, ancient trails and dramatic Himalayan backdrop. From here we begin a long descent of more than 1,000 metres to the valley floor before climbing again through traditional settlements and trading villages, including Ngawal, where prayer flags and stone houses reflect the region’s Tibetan heritage. We then continue along the trail to Braga, completing a long yet exhilarating day in the mountains and positioning ourselves well for the journey toward Thorong La. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Braga

Meals: B,L,D

Today we join the main trail of the Annapurna Circuit and make our way to the bustling mountain town of Manang, the principal trading centre of the valley. Here we pause for a well deserved tea break and have time to explore the small bazaar, where traders, trekkers and local villagers gather. Leaving Manang, the trail climbs gradually through the open alpine landscape toward Yak Kharka. As we gain altitude the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with wide views across the high Himalaya. Along the way we enjoy impressive views of Annapurna III (7,555 m / 24,787 ft) and the distinctive peak of Gangapurna (7,454 m / 24,455 ft) rising above the valley. By afternoon we arrive at the grazing pastures of Yak Kharka, where yaks and other livestock are often seen grazing in the high alpine meadows. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Yak Kharka

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a shorter stage that positions us well for the crossing of Thorong La tomorrow. Leaving Yak Kharka, the trail climbs steadily through high alpine terrain of scree slopes and sparse pasture, with the dramatic landscape of the upper valley unfolding around us. As we gain altitude the vegetation becomes scarce and the environment feels increasingly remote. The trail eventually brings us to Thorong Phedi, located at the base of the pass. In earlier days of the classic Annapurna Circuit, the small tea houses here served as an important resting point for trekkers preparing to cross the pass. We take the afternoon to rest, hydrate and prepare for the early start required for the crossing of Thorong La. Accommodation: Lodge Thorong Phedi

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a long, challenging and immensely rewarding day as we cross the famous Thorong La, the high point of the Annapurna Circuit. An early start is essential as we begin the steady climb toward the pass, maintaining a slow and consistent pace while adjusting to the thin mountain air. Our aim is to reach the pass by late morning before the strong winds that often sweep across the high saddle later in the day. The final stretch can feel demanding, with a few false summits along the way, but the sight of the large prayer flagged cairn marking the top of Thorong La makes the final steps especially rewarding. From the pass we enjoy extraordinary views across the Annapurna Range, while to the north ridge after ridge of snow covered mountains stretch toward the borderlands of Tibet. From here it is a long descent of around 1,600 metres to the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes and ancient temples, it is a memorable place to conclude this remarkable day in the high Himalaya. Accommodation: Lodge Muktinath

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a more relaxed stage as we gradually descend toward the Kali Gandaki River, giving time to reflect on the achievements of the past days. The Kali Gandaki Valley forms the deepest gorge in the world, carving its way between the towering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, both rising above 8,000 metres. Much of today’s walk follows the route that now runs through Mustang, with the trail descending steadily along the wide valley floor. The landscape here feels distinctly different, with open terrain, windswept riverbeds and views toward the dramatic peaks that frame the valley. By afternoon we arrive at the town of Jomsom, the administrative centre of the Mustang region, where we can relax and enjoy a well deserved rest after the high mountain crossing of Thorong La. Accommodation: Lodge Jomsom

Meals: B,L,D

This morning we take a spectacular early flight from Jomsom through the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge, flying between the towering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The flight to Pokhara (822 m / 2,697 ft) takes around 20 minutes, offering outstanding views across the deep valley and surrounding Himalayan peaks. On arrival in Pokhara we connect with our onward flight to Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft), a short flight of around 25 minutes across the forested foothills and terraced farmland of central Nepal. Upon arrival in Kathmandu we transfer to our hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Please note: If the flight from Jomsom to Pokhara is cancelled due to weather conditions, we will travel by road to Pokhara and connect with the flight to Kathmandu the following day. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: B

Today you have a full day to explore the vibrant city of Kathmandu. You may wish to begin with a visit to two of Nepal’s most significant World Heritage sites: Pashupatinath, the country’s most sacred Hindu temple and cremation site, and Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist site outside of Tibet. Alternatively, you can wander through the bustling streets and markets of Thamel or explore other cultural landmarks such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), perched on a hilltop with panoramic views, or the historic plazas of Patan, Bhaktapur, and Kathmandu Durbar Square, all renowned for their intricate architecture and cultural heritage. This evening there may be an opportunity to enjoy a celebratory group dinner together after our journey in the mountains. This day is built into the itinerary as a contingency day, providing flexibility in case flights or transportation from the mountains are impacted by weather or technical delays. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: B

After breakfast, arrangements conclude unless further arrangements have been made. Those departing by aircraft will be transferred to Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport for their onward flights.
