Experience what has been called one of the best treks in Patagonia by Lonely Planet! The Dientes circuit is a 4 day and 42km circuit on Navarino Island and it’s the southernmost major trek in the world! It’s a tough hike even for experienced trekkers, mainly due to the remoteness and the ever-changing weather conditions in Patagonia. Cross the Dientes de Navarino massif at the far end of South America, trek along rural roads, through rocky wilderness, forests, peat bogs, valleys, lakes, and rivers. Trek to the highest point of the circuit of approximately 900m and take in stunning views of jagged mountain peaks, the Beagle Channel, the town of Puerto Williams in Chile and Ushuaia in Argentina, Nassau Bay, the Wollaston archipelago, and the mythical archipelago of Cape Horn. This circuit on Navarino Island is one of the few very remote places left on earth and few people have undertaken this adventure. It will appeal to experienced hikers who are looking to immerse in true wilderness and remoteness at the end of the world and who want to carry a full pack of approximately 15kg and are able to cope with adverse weather conditions. This trip is weather dependent, and the full circuit cannot be guaranteed. If we complete the circuit or not, it will be an adventure of a lifetime!

Trip Code: DCP

We’ll start the trip by flying from Punta Arenas to the small town of Puerto Williams*. At the end of the day we will enjoy a nice meal and have a briefing about the next day’s trekking excursion. You can ask your guide about visiting the OMORA Ethnobotanical Park to experience “magnifying glass tourism,” a new venture that opens up the world of miniature lichens, moss and bryophyte forests. Overnight: Errante Lodge or similar * You will need to make your own way to the airport in Punta Arenas on Day 1 of the trip, flights usually depart around 10am so a pre-night accommodation is highly recommended. Please Note: This trip can start or end in Ushuaia instead of Punta Arenas for an additional cost. From Ushuaia: After the immigration process and port tax payment at Ushuaia's port in Argentina, you will take a boat across the Beagle Channel to Navarino Island. The navigation on board a semi-rigid vessel takes approximately 30 minutes. Upon arrival at Puerto Navarino you will be picked up by car and transferred to Errante Lodge in Puerto Williams (approx 54km, 1:40 hr drive).

Today our trekking adventure starts! After breakfast we transfer to the trail head and commence the Dientes Circuit. We trek through the Robalo Valley to Salto Lagoon and admire amazing views of the Beagle Channel and Puerto Williams along the way. Here at the lagoon we will set up our first camp. Depending on weather conditions, your guide will decide which of the two possible paths to take: the high end slope of the Robalo valley or the path from the back of the valley. Either way, the landscape will amaze you and you will get to the campsite in time for a warm dinner. 1) From the high end of the eastern slope of the Robalo Valley: from the trailhead (100m), climb up for 90 minutes to reach Cerro Bandera (590m), where you will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view over Puerto Williams and the Beagle Channel. Then, continue for about 2 to 3 hours along Robalo Valley and above the tree line. At the end of the trail descent for about half an hour to finally reach Lake del Salto (490m), where our first campsite will be set up. 2) From the back of the Robalo Valley: we ascent from the valley floor and hike most of the time through the forest. The Dientes de Navarino massif will come into sight. Several lagoons, lakes and beaver dams can be observed along the way. We will reach our camp on the shore of Lake del Salto in the afternoon. Overnight: Camping. Distance: 6km

Meals:  B,L,D

Today, we cross the Dientes de Navarino Cordillera, while enjoying breathtaking views of Nassau Bay and Wollaston islands, both part of Cape Horn. Within two hours of walking, we will conquer three consecutive ascents (716m, 800m and 765m) and we reach the second highest point on the trek. After passing several lakes, we climb up to Paso Ventarrón (696m), from where we can enjoy incredible views of the Dientes de Navarino massif and Codrington Mountains. The rest of today’s hike is much easier and descents towards Guerrico Pass and then on to Lake Martillo, the second campsite on our trek. Overnight: Camping. Distance: 17.5km

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast, we continue our trek to the Guerrico Valley, by walking through beautiful forests and experiencing amazing views of Montes Lindenmayer, named in 2001 by the Chilean Ministry of Natural Resources for the author of the Lonely Planet guide. We then climb to Virginia pass (90 minutes, 860m height), the highest point of our trek. The views from here are incredible and you will have time to enjoy the mountains and sea of Tierra del Fuego. After a well-deserved break, we descend for about 90 minutes before we reach the well protected campsite in the forest, on the shore of Lake Las Guanacos. Overnight: Camping. Distance: 9km

Meals:  B,L,D

Today is the last day of our hike and we soon have to say goodbye to this amazing and remote trekking experience. Before we reach Puerto Williams in the afternoon, we have time to take in more incredible views while descending for 9km back to sea level. At the end of the trek a vehicle awaits us, and we will be transferred to Errante Lodge, where you will be welcomed with a cocktail to celebrate the completion of the southernmost hike in the world! Then, we will enjoy a nice lunch together. You have time to rest in the afternoon before we head out again to visit the interesting Martín Gusinde Anthropological Museum in Puerto Williams. It’s the southernmost museum in the world and hosts artefacts, maps and photos related to the 10,000-year history of the Yahgan people and European settlers since the 19th century. You will find that samples of the local flora and fauna are displayed as well, and we highly recommend visiting this museum. Tonight, we will have a farewell dinner at the lodge and celebrate our achievements and share our experiences of the last few days on this wonderful trek. Overnight: Errante Lodge or similar. Distance: 9km Please Note: Depending on the opening hours of the museum it might not be possible to visit it during your time on Navarino Island (Museum opening hours are Tue - Fri 9.30am to 1.00pm and 3.00pm to 6.00pm; Sat + Sun 2.30pm to 6.30pm. This can change without notice.)

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast we have to say goodbye to this wonderful part of the world and you will be transferred to the airport for our flight to Punta Arenas. The trip concludes on arrival at Punta Arenas airport. Flights from Punta Arenas to your next destination have to depart after 5:00pm, however we recommend not to book flights out of Punta Arenas before 7:00pm. IMPORTANT: Trekking will always be subject to weather conditions. We reserve the right to change the order of the days in this itinerary and this is at the discretion of the trip guide and based on operational considerations. The trip guide can modify, change or eliminate part of the itinerary based on safety and weather considerations.
