There’s no better way to experience the wonders of Angkor than by bike. This short, active journey combines Cambodia’s most iconic temples with glimpses of everyday life beyond the tourist trails.

From Siem Reap, cycle quiet backroads through rice paddies and palm lined villages to the temples of Roluos, the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. Continue to the great monuments of Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm, where tree roots and stone carvings intertwine.

Each day’s ride reveals a new layer of Cambodia’s story, from the grandeur of ancient kings to the resourceful stilted villages of the Tonle Sap Lake. Along the way, your expert local guide shares the legends and history that bring the stories to life.

Sua s’dei! Welcome to Siem Reap, Cambodia. You will be greeted by your driver at Siem Reap International Airport and transferred to the hotel. Please look for the World Expeditions welcome sign as you exit the arrivals hall. In the afternoon, we cycle out for our first encounter with the great ancient Angkorian temples. Roluos Group is the perfect place to start, a collection of monuments which represent the remains of Hariharalaya, the first major capital of the Angkor era Khmer Empire. The temples date back to the late ninth century and are believed to denote the beginning of the classic period in Khmer architecture. Bakong was the first of many mountain temples surrounded by a moat, representing the mythological Mount Meru. Note: Appropriate attire when visiting the Temples of Angkor are; bottoms to cover knees and tops to cover shoulders. These are sacred sites and revealing clothing is not allowed within the temple grounds. Visitors can and are frequently turned away from temples if not wearing appropriate attire. Today is a full day to explore the most famous temple complex, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Angkor Archaeological Park by bike - the perfect way to experience this awe inspiring place. To beat the crowds we start early at Ta Prohm which unlike many other Angkorian temples has been left as it it was when first rediscovered - a photogenic and atmospheric maze of trees growing out of temple ruins amidst jungle surroundings. Continue on to the lofty heights of Ta Keo then through one of four mighty gatehouses into the ancient walled city of Angkor Thom. Angkor Thom was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII and at the time was the most populous city in the world with 2m inhabitants. The crowning jewel of the city is Bayon at its epicentre. This 12th century masterpiece is a study in grandeur, its exterior gallery walls featuring world class bas-reliefs and its 54 towers, decorated with 216 gargantuan faces. We'll break for lunch before completing our day at the most incredible temple of them all, Angkor Wat - the ultimate expression of Khmer genius. The temple is in fact the largest religious structure in the world and has inspired visitors for centuries. This evening, enjoy a special treat with a performance from PHARE. The Cambodian Circus has long been famous for their performances, and this NGO teaching disadvantaged youths in performance arts is a regular at international circus conventions worldwide. Enjoy their interpretations of traditional folklore tales and modern life. Cycling: ~40km Overnight: Baitong Heritage Hotel or similar

After breakfast, we cycle south toward the vast wetlands on the edge of Asia's largest freshwater lake, Tonle Sap. The lake's size and depth increases with the annual monsoon rains by as much as six times and local people have found ingenious ways to live with the ever changing water world. Kampong Kleang is a stilted village settlement of over 20,000 people where structures tower up to ten meters above the water. Here you can learn about the lives of the subsistence fishing families who call this water world home. Following the morning tour, we'll return to Siem Reap. A transfer to the airport for your outbound flight is provided. Trip concludes Cycling distance: ~ 60km (one way) Note: Flight should not depart earlier than 17:00. Note: From February to August, water levels on the Tonle Sap Lake can be decrease dramatically which may affect arrangements.

Bikes Will My Trip Run?

Modern Mountain Bikes

The bikes used on this trip are modern aluminium framed, front suspension mountain bikes. Consistent and safe braking is ensured by disc brakes and the wide spread of gears provide the ability to ride up and back down the hills in comfort and confidence. If you have a saddle and clip in pedals you wish to bring and use, the mechanic would more than happy to fit them for you.

*For safety reasons, we also insist that cycle helmets be included as a compulsory item on your equipment list.

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?
