Overview

The Yuraygir National Park is the largest coastal park in New South Wales and one of the most diverse bioregions in the country. From age-old coastal landforms, littoral rainforest, eucalypt forest, woodland and wetlands, you can see it all in Yuraygir National Park. The National Park is home to the stunning Yuraygir Coastal Track which follows the footsteps of the ancient coastal emus that once thrived in the park.

We walk southwards taking in the sweeping and ever-changing views. The park is home to an abundance of Australian native wildlife. As you walk keep an eye out for kangaroos, white-bellied sea eagles, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, emus and whales. Carrying only a day pack, you'll walk along pristine beaches, cross creeks and rock hop across multiple small and remote beaches. Each night you will stay in beautifully appointed and comfortable canvas tents with real mattress beds, organic cotton sheets and cosy quilts. With one river to cross by boat, deserted beaches and spectacular headlands to discover, your guide will take you on an adventure to remember.

This morning you will be picked up from a designated location in Yamba at around 9am for the short drive to Angourie where the walk will commence at 9:30am. Alternatively, please advise in advance if you wish to self-drive to Angourie (local parking is available - 10min drive from Yamba). The walk begins at Angourie, where guides meet the group for a full briefing before heading south along Angourie Beach. The first of many whale watching opportunities comes at Durrangan Lookout before the path continues to Shelley Beach, crossing vast sand dunes and springwater creeks along the way. The afternoon arrival at the pristine Lake Arragan is one of the trip's first big moments — the campsite sits in a beautiful setting beside the lake, perfectly set up and ready with afternoon tea waiting. After settling into your canvas tent accommodation, dinner is served around the campfire as the first camp night begins. Walking distance: 13km, 4-5 hours. Overnight: Lake Arragan, Yuraygir National Park. *You will need to bring your own lunch for today. We recommend purchasing something in Yamba before your pick up this morning.

After a delicious breakfast and some early morning sightings of east grey kangaroos around camp, your guides will pack a sumptuous lunch and you will start the walk towards Red Cliff and beyond. The walk today takes in sweeping stretches of golden beaches and protected woodlands of paperbarks. In the afternoon you will arrive at Sandon River, with time to explore Plover Island, a place of great cultural significance to the Yaegl people. This afternoon finishes with a transfer back to our camp at Lake Arragan. Walking distance: 13km, 4-5 hours. Overnight: Lake Arragan.

The day begins with the walk's most memorable moment of transition: a river crossing by boat. From the far bank, the longest beach section of the trip stretches south along Sandon Beach toward Illaroo. Halfway through the day, the route leaves the shore and joins the back trail through coastal woodlands, where guides set up a shaded picnic lunch. The afternoon walk into Illaroo Campground is easy and pleasant. The evening is spent around the campfire while our chef will prepare dinner. Walking distance: 11km, 3-4 hours. Overnight: Illaroo, Yuraygir National Park.

After another warm and comfortable night sleep, our chefs will prepare a tasty breakfast with locally sourced produce and Byron Bay grown coffee beans. If you're an early riser today is a great opportunity to get up early and watch the sunrise over the ocean. The walk today is the most visually varied day. The morning route meanders through paperbark woodland where emus are occasionally spotted, before exploring the coves, mangroves and marine life around Wilsons Head. After a river crossing at Wooli we make our way across pebbly beaches to the most challenging section of the walk over rocky platforms towards Station Creek. A short walk through the sand dunes takes us to our camp for the night Walking distance: 18km, 5-6 hours. Overnight: Station Creek, Yuraygir National Park

The final day's walk from Station Creek offers some of the majestic Pacific views. The tidal river crossing at Red Rock is the final challenge to face before your transfer back to Yamba. A transfer returns the group to Yamba around 3pm, where the tour concludes. Walking distance: 6km, 2 hours.

Stay in comfortable camps each night

Comfortable Camping

On this trip you will spend 4 nights camping at 3 different National Park campgrounds where there are compost toilets, drinking water and private washing rooms or canvas cubicles. On request we can provide hot water for washing.

We provide single or twin share tent accommodation in premium canvas tents with a separate living space and bedroom. Each sitting room has chairs and tables provided.

Most groups are made up of a mixture of single participants and couples. If you are travelling independently you will receive your own tent for no extra cost.

Sleep on comfortable mattresses at our basecamp

Real Mattress Beds

Real mattress beds with organic cotton sheets and seasonally appropriate quilts ensure you have the best nights sleep. Tents can be configured to suit single, twin share or double (kingsize) sleeping. The tents also include chairs and tables. The tents offer plenty of room for two people and gear.

Easy access to amenities block provided by NSW National Parks that include compost toilets and private wash rooms.

Set up for enjoyment

Each campsite is set up with your comfort and enjoyment in mind. We have a common covered area which includes a library of books and magazines, art supplies, and wood carving tools for you to use at your leisure. There is also a common shelter area with mobile firepits.

Every departure date advises whether the date is confirmed, and roughly how full it is. Here is what each one means.

Is the departure confirmed?

Guaranteed to go This departure has reached its minimum number and will run.
It is the point travellers should wait for before booking any non-refundable flights.
Close to guaranteed This appears only when a date is close to reaching minimum numbers. If it shows 1 or 2 to guaranteed, book as a pair on a date needing two and it reaches its minimum. Your booking confirms the date for everybody already booked.

How full is the date I am looking at?

Space is filling or Space is filling fast This date has bookings and places are still open. Filling fast means limited spots available, so don't leave your decision too late.
Closing soon Down to its last few places, or close enough to departure that we are finalising numbers. Still bookable online.
Closed Not bookable online - either full, or inside the notice we need to arrange permits, flights and logistics. Ask us anyway, you never know!

Will this trip actually go ahead, or could it be cancelled?

If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings. 

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run. 

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route. 

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?

Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or in many cases, just for the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.
