This voyage aboard the Polar Pioneer explores the rarely visited northern isles of Svalbard ‐ a spectacular ice‐covered archipelago halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Famous for dramatic frozen landscapes and iconic wildlife, the Svalbard Islands ‐ including Spitsbergen ‐ remain a virtually unspoiled wilderness. Home to less than 3,000 people, this is a breathtaking world of pack ice and sweeping tundra, glacier‐covered mountains, deep fjords and milky‐blue icebergs. Svalbard’s abundant wildlife was once a huge draw for whalers and trappers, but the protected region now provides safe haven for the huge seabird colonies, walrus, reindeer, Arctic foxes and polar bears that we’ll be keeping watch for. When the pack ice opens up it allows us to attempt landings in some of the farthest reaches of the archipelago, including the outer islands of Nordaustlandet, Storøya and Kvitøya, and summer this far north of the Arctic Circle means ample daylight hours to experience the remarkable landscapes and wildlife Svalbard has to offer.
BRIEF ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Arrive in Longyearbyen and embark 2 | Cruise north along the coast of Spitsbergen 3/8 | Round Nordaustlandet and the eastern islands of Storøya and Kvitøya 7/8 | Cruise along the east coast of Spitsbergen 9/10 | Cruising down the north-western coast of pitsbergen 11 | Disembark Longyearbyen and transfer to airport for onward flight. *Please note itinerary is a guideline sea ice and weather condtions will determine the actual itinerary

Revel in Spitsbergen’s unique wildlife and
attempt to visit Kvitøya
The island of Kvitøya (the “White Island”) is one of the least visited places in Svalbard, the spectacular ice‐covered archipelago halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Following a flexible itinerary, this exploratory voyage aboard the vessel Hondius aims to land on Kvitøya along with various spots on Svalbard’s largest island, Spitsbergen, offering access to some of the Arctic’s most rewarding landscapes and wildlife encounters. With ample opportunities to observe playful grey seals, packed walrus haulouts and polar bears roaming the ice in search of food, we’ll also keep watch for little auk, black and Brünnich’s guillemot, Arctic skua and puffin colonies. Zodiacs ferry us to shore to walk across the tundra, up to high points for sweeping views across the vast glaciated inland and down to the iceberg‐strewn bay where our ship is dwarfed by the monumental landscape.
