 St Francis Way
Chiusi – Rome, 373km
The St Francis Way is an Italian Camino route inspired by the life of St Francis of Assisi, one of the most revered religious figures in history. While the pilgrim route follows an ancient Roman road linking Florence to Rome, it is best to think of the St Francis Way as a collection of shorter pilgrimages that combine to tell the story of the patron saint of ecology's life.
As you follow in the footsteps of the saint, who moved across the route over time spreading his messages about living in harmony with the world, with man and with God, you can feel his presence and easily imagine him wandering along this unique and spiritual path.
The most picturesque section traverses eastern Tuscany and northern Umbria, the ‘green heart’ of Italy, through dense ancient forests, orchards, vineyards, olive groves, medieval hilltop villages and chapels and crosses dedicated to St Francis.
Gear Tip: A water bladder is a great way to hydrate efficiently on the walk. Good day packs have special compartments to accommodate bladders holding up to two litres.
Training/Fitness Tip: Do lots of hill walking as part of your pre trip training.
Why walk the St Francis Way?
• Choose from five stages between Chiusi della Verna and Rome
• Discover the wild slopes of the Apennine mountains and the best preserved forests in Italy
• Quintessential Italian towns each with their own unique atmosphere: Assisi, Spello, Spoleto, Rieti and Monterotondo
• Ideal for those seeking a more spiritual and authentic pilgrim experience
