World Animal Protection classifies an elephant friendly venue as one that doesn't "use elephants for entertainment or allow direct tourist-elephant contact". In line with World Expeditions Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, the elephants at Tharu Tiger Tops Lodge are free to behave naturally. This is why this venue has been listed by World Animal Protection as an elephant-friendly. You will learn about the complex needs of elephants and how we can best ensure their welfare and conservation.

Itinerary

This morning we depart Kathmandu for the drive to Chitwan. We generally arrive in time for lunch, followed by a river cruise down the Narayani River where we keep our eyes peeled for a variety of birdlife and wildlife. Top of the list are the endangered fish-eating Gharial crocodile and its more sinister relative, the Marsh-Mugger. In the late afternoon stroll down to the rivers edge to observe the elephants bathe and enjoy a sundowner on the banks. It's a beautiful sight as the elephants enjoy the cooling waters of the river with the tranquil backdrop of a typical Terai sunset. (the water is too cold for the elephants in the months of December and January so an alternate activity will be offered). NB: It is possible to join this trip from Pokhara. Please ask us for additional costs involved in starting in Pokhara and ending in Kathmandu or vice versa.

We rise early this morning to walk beside the elephants on their morning forage in the grass lands nearby. The mahouts at this time will cut and collect the grasses needed for the elephants throughout the rest of the day. Mornings are often misty creating a wonderful atmosphere as you watch the elephants move through the long grass. Once the elephants have had their breakfast it will be your turn to indulge in a morning meal before jumping into open-top Land Rover for a jungle safari through Chitwan National Park. We will take a packed lunch with us as we search for the park for the elusive Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Rhino and numerous other species that call the park home. After returning to camp the late afternoon will be spent learning more about the elephant's and the relationship they share with their mahout along with a visit to the organic farm, which is an integral component of the lodges sustainable approach. Depending on the time of year other options and activities may be on offer.

We rise early again to enjoy one last activity, and after breakfast we depart the lodge and transfer by road to Kathmandu. Trip concludes on arrival in Kathmandu.
