Overall, our 9-day trip on the Kumano Kodo was fantastic. Having the day-by-day logistics handled for us meant there were truly zero headaches - everything ran smoothly, allowing us to focus entirely on the experience. Every host was warm and welcoming, accommodations were consistently clean, and the food was exceptional. It was especially convenient to have yukata provided for wearing around the guesthouses and to dinner, which added to the comfort and sense of tradition.
We loved the diversity of places we stayed, which gave us a rare and intimate look at rural Japan. There’s no way we would have discovered places like Hotel Urashima on our own. The trail itself felt magical, and traveling in December meant we encountered relatively few people - made even better by unexpectedly great weather.
Could we have done the trip more cheaply on our own? Probably. But the ease of having everything arranged was absolutely worth it. The maps and bus schedules were excellent, and it was surprisingly easy to navigate - even without speaking Japanese. The only improvement we’d suggest would be receiving the guidebook and daily itineraries a bit earlier, before departing for Japan, to allow more time to review and prepare.
All in all, it was a seamless, memorable experience and an incredibly special way to experience Japan.
