Yet despite these struggles, the strength and tenacity of the Tibetan people prevails.

Tibet is a deeply religious land with an ancient culture that is still preserved today. Visiting the sacred places where the Tibetan people worship is inspiring. It is an experience that remains with those fortunate enough to visit for many years.

Whatever adventure you choose in Tibet, we are sure that you’ll fall in love with this spiritual, dramatic and inspiring autonomous region.

1. Tibet's Unique Landscape

Tibet’s phenomenal landscape is like no other place on Earth: rugged, remote and unforgettable. The vast Tibetan plateau contrasted against the snowcapped peaks of the world’s highest mountains will leave you in awe.

Tibet is often referred to as the ‘roof of the world’. This is because the majority of Tibet sits at an altitude around 4500m above sea level. The Tibetan plateau stretches for some 2000km from west to east, with many peaks on the border of Nepal soaring well above that. With the Himalaya to the south, the Karakoram to the west and the Kunlun to the north, you only have to turn your head to get another magnificent view of the mountains.

A highlight of travelling to Tibet is the memorable flight to Lhasa over the Himalayan range. With clear weather, the views of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu and countless other peaks stretching into the horizon are breathtaking.

Tibet is a superb trekking destination. The remarkable landscapes and Himalaya views are one of the greatest reasons to visit Tibet. As you trek the high passes and winding trails that are strewn with Buddhist prayer flags you’ll feel greatly inspired by this ancient land.

2. The Tibetan People and Culture

Experiencing the Tibetan culture is undoubtedly a highlight of visiting Tibet.

Tibetans are deeply religious people. Their devotion to Buddhism can be traced back to the earliest days of Buddhism’s introduction into Tibet, more than 1300 years ago. The profound influence of Buddhism for the Tibetan people is a highlight of any visit to Tibet.

Aside from a wide array of Buddhist gods and goddesses worhsipped by the Tibetan people, they also worship the mountains as living deities. All over Tibet you will spot pilgrims spinning prayer wheels and walking around temples, monasteries and mountains. This is always in a clockwise direction, whereas followers of the indigenous Tibetan religion, the Bon, walk around sacred sites in an anti-clockwise direction.

Despite the grandeur of the scenery, the most memorable experiences of Tibet are likely to come from moments you’ve shared with the locals. Whether it’s the yak-butter tea offered to you from a monk in a remote monastery or a spontaneous picnic with a herding family on the shores of a remote lake, you are bound to leave Tibet with a deeper insight and appreciation into their unique cultural identity.

3. Festivals

There are over 100 festivals in Tibet that occur throughout the year. Experiencing a festival in Tibet is a unique way to get an insight into Tibetan Buddhism.

One of Tibet’s most significant festivals is the Saga Dawa festival held at Mount Kailash - one of the most sacred places in the Buddhist and Hindu religions.

At the Saga Dawa Festival many thousands of pilgrims throughout Tibet pay homage to Mount Kailash. The sacred mountain has long been regarded by Hindus and Buddhists as the Mythical Mount Meru, the cosmic centre of the universe from which all life flows.

Thousands of pilgrims will gather and pay homage to the mountain by performing a kora, or clockwise circumambulation of the base of the mountain. The trek lasts several days and crosses a 5800m pass.

4. The Remarkable Monasteries

Ancient monasteries are scattered throughout Tibet and were the most significant social institutions of historical Tibet. With religion being extremely important to Tibetans, monasteries are centers of learning were monks and nuns are responsible for preserving and spreading Buddhist teachings.

Sadly over 6000 monasteries were destroyed during China’s Cultural Revolution. Since the 1980s some monasteries have rebuilt, with greater religious freedom being granted. Today, monks have returned to monasteries across Tibet and monastic education has continued.

Most monasteries and temples in Tibet extend a warm welcome to visitors and even in remote areas they will often offer places to stay the night. Some of the monasteries visited on our trips include Samye, Ganden and Jorkhang. Visiting a monastery in Tibet is a fascinating way to get an insight into the religion that has profoundly shaped Tibet today.

5. Travelling on the Friendship Highway

The journey on the Friendship Highway is an epic drive over 850km between Kathmandu and Lhasa. It is without doubt one of the most spectacular journeys in the world.

The border crossing between Nepal and Tibet was closed after it was damaged in the 2015 earthquake. However, no other section of the highway is damaged so it is still possible to drive through Tibet right up to Rongphu Monastery and Everest base camp.

The drive along the highway will take 2-3 days but is well worth it with spectacular scenery along the way. You’ll see special cultural monuments, as well as vast grasslands, the upper valley of Yarlung Tsangpo River and breathtaking Himalayan views.

Want to see it for yourself? The region combines all of the essential ingredients of the perfect adventure holiday – nature, culture, history, food and plenty of outdoor activities.

An active adventure often presents a wonderful opportunity to experience authentic interactions with locals, stay in less travelled locations and create more memorable experiences than laying on the beach all week (though it's always nice to fit a bit of that in as well!).

From participating in a local cooking class in Laos, or cycling around the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia; to trekking through the luscious green hills of Northern Thailand, or kayaking through the emerald green waters of Hanoi in Vietnam, we've put together a list of places and hidden gems you should celebrate the holiday season at if you're after a truly memorable escape.

1. Laos – an unspoiled gem of Southeast Asia

A place full of unique landscapes, colourful cultures and a delicious cuisine - Laos is an unspoiled gem of Southeast Asia. With meandering rivers, remote villages and tranquil cities, Laos is famous for its gentle pace that invites you to slow down, relax and absorb your surroundings.

Yet, whilst it may be relaxing, by no means is it boring! Laos’ cities are a mixture of golden Buddhist temples, French colonial architecture, and colourful markets that are thick with aromas of incense and street food. These cities are not too far away from crystal waterfalls, caves and jungle-clad mountains to explore, making Laos a fantastic destination for an adventure-filled Christmas getaway!

Since Christmas is all about family, why not take them with you on an adventure through Laos on World Expeditions’ 7-day Laos Family Adventure. Vietnam – stunning natural beauty with a distinctive heritage

With its striking landscapes, gripping history and rich culture - Vietnam is astoundingly exotic, absolutely compelling and is full of unforgettable experiences. It’s a country with stunning natural beauty and a distinctive heritage that keeps you coming back for more.

From the hustle and bustle of Hanoi, to the breathtaking waters of Ha Long Bay, one of Asia’s most spectacular sights – wherever you choose to go in Vietnam, you are in for an incredible adventure.

World Expeditions’ Vietnam by Bike is a 14-day tour that provides you with the opportunity to see the best of coastal Vietnam. Explore the ever-changing landscapes of tranquil highlands, palm fringed beaches and country roads that lead through mango and coconut groves. Cambodia – the perfect place to get off-the-beaten-path

A small country with a big history, Cambodia was once Asia’s most impressive early civilisations - the great empire of Angkor, whose legendary temples attract masses of visitors every year. Yet beyond the temples, much of Cambodia remains much less ‘touristy’ than its neighbouring countries Vietnam and Thailand, with many places in Cambodia untouched.

Cambodia is well-known for its incredible ruins of Angkor, yet it is the secluded coastlines, charismatic villages, superb temples and friendly locals that also make Cambodia so special. An intriguing land of jungles, rice paddies and great rivers, with an ancient culture and marvellous temples, Cambodia is a destination full of adventures.

By far the best way to experience the real essence of Cambodia is to get off-the-beaten path and away from the crowds of the main tourist sites. You could hike, bike or paddle your way through the peaceful back-country and rural communities.

Mix things up with a multi-activity adventure this Christmas on World Expeditions’ 12-day Bike, Hike and Kayak Cambodia trip. Commencing at Siem Reap and concluding in Phnom Penh, this adventurous itinerary takes you through timeless villages where you will be greeted with generous Cambodian hospitality. Hike along remote and secluded trails and explore impressive archaeological sites, diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife.

<img alt="The extraordinary Angkor Wat | Lachlan Gardiner" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="2992124" dynamiccroppedimage="1" flexibleaspectratio="4x3" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Asia/Cambodia/LachlanGardiner_HCMCtoAnkor_Jan2019_Day_10_HIGHRES-7344-2992124-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Asia/Cambodia/LachlanGardiner_HCMCtoAnkor_Jan2019_Day_10_HIGHRES-7344-2992124-###width###px.jpg" />

5. Myanmar – a place so undiscovered

Yet to be consumed by Western culture, now is the perfect time to visit Myanmar, a place that is blessed with cultural riches and striking beauty where the generous spirit of the Burmese people rise above the country's challenging history.

The awe-inspiring city of Bagan, one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites, is filled with thousands of incredible Buddhist temples, pagodas, palaces and monasteries. In Yangon you’ll enjoy bustling open-air markets, colonial architecture and the golden complex of Shwedagon Pagoda. Cruise along the tranquil Irrawaddy, kayak among floating markets or embark on a trek through quiet forests and overnight in a rural village at a home-stay with a local family.

Now is the time to visit the beautiful and untouched country of Myanmar with your family. What is it about the region that keeps you coming back for more?

I do some cycling in the UK but I like Southeast Asia because cycling is reasonably slow and often on backroads, so you get to see things that most tourists don’t. Also, it's close to Australia and good value.

Other things that keep me coming back include the culture, the very friendly people, the food and the cold beer. We feel safe on the roads in Asia and every ride with World Expeditions has been very professionally run.

Vietnam by Bike

What do you like about cycling in a group rather than solo?

Group riding is important because out on the roads it feels safer. You have back-up support with a bus and truck if it’s too hilly, too hot or you don’t feel well. We spend every evening eating, drinking and laughing... and that's hard to do by yourself.

Why do you prefer to cycle your way through a country rather than walk or bus?

Most of my friends who come along with me are keen cyclists in Australia so it's our preferred mode of transport. However, my wife Libby has done a lot of walks with World Expeditions and in 2015 we did the Cornwall Coast Walk with UTracks.

What advice would you give to someone who’s never done a cycle holiday but wants to give it a go?

It’s best to be fit, but if you don’t feel fit enough you can always go on the bus and still have a great time. The accommodation is good and is always clean and tidy with friendly staff.

I have always organised friends to go with me and usually get 6 to 12 people to go. Not everyone will know each other and we don’t make it private. These sorts of trips are good for new people to join but if they don’t want to mix socially with others then these trips are not for them. On this last trip there were 6 of us and 3 other males from Sydney, Perth and the UK and we all got on really well plus we ensure we swap roommates on all trips to mix it up.

Embark on your own cycle journey

Whether you’re a first timer or an experienced cyclist, our cycling holidays open up a world of adventure and self discovery. View our Cycle Journeys in Asia >
2407Behind the Lens with Nuran Zorlu on China's Silk Roadhttps://assets.worldexpeditions.com/Blog/PostId/2392/on-the-couch-with-photographer-and-social-scientist-nuran-zorluAdventure Travel,Photography,Community,Guides and staff,Destinations,Asia,China,Silk Road,Middle East,ActivitiesTue, 07 Mar 2017 23:40:13 GMT

A camera gives a photographer a unique opportunity to view the world in a very specific way. So it's no surprise that award winning photographer, Nuran Zorlu, is also a passionate archivist, sociologist, historian and self-declared foodie.

Nuran is no stranger to mentoring others in his chosen profession. He has taught at a number of prestigious institutions, including the Art Gallery of NSW, the Australian Centre for Photography and TAFE Sydney. In broader circles he is known for his exhibitions and energetic lectures which combine his first loves of philosophy and history with his photography work.

A brilliant example of this combination is Nuran's most recent project, 'Persia to Iran', a travelogue showcasing Iran's most historically and culturally significant sites.

In September 2017, Nuran will lead a unique journey along China's Silk Road, an ideal opportunity for inquisitive travellers to enrich their knowledge of these sites and cultures as well as explore the region through the eyes of a spirited historian and photographer.

We sat down with Nuran in Sydney to find out more about his love for photography and how he uses his passion to connect with the history and culture of the places he travels.

What is it about photography that you love so much?

Photography gives us knowledge and a very commonly used phrase that sums this up is "a picture tells a thousand words". A camera gives the photographer a unique opportunity to view the world in a very specific way. We can focus on the things that matter to us and create some images to explain what we want to say to the viewer.

<img alt="KhorpVirap and Mt Ararat. Image: Nuran Zorlu

What are your top 3 travel photography do’s and don'ts?

Many of the rules to create a perfect image apply to travel photography, yet with travel photography, we need to capture the feel of the place or the human conditions at its best.

Let's look at the do's first. I am a very disciplined traveller. When I was young, I used to jump onto a train to reach an unknown destination which was great fun. Now, these days I am mainly interested in culture and I would like to fulfill my academic side as well, therefore, knowing the destination is vital for my work. Of course, you can explore a new route or you will find something that grabs your attention when you are on the road. Yet, preparation is very vital. I will say research and organisation is a must do.

One of my favourite Chinese proverbs is 'if I have given 10 hours to cut a tree, I will spend 9 hours to sharpen my axe'.

The second most important thing is dealing with the locals. When I am on location, I always hire a local guide or driver. These people do not only know where they are going, but they are your insurance policy as well. These are the people who know the road closures, safe places, etc.

The third thing is probably the most important one, respect. Every culture has a right to live with their own social codes, as a traveller we might be in their locality for only a day, or even an hour. This notion of respect creates a very positive vibe and eye contact with a smile will open lots of doors.

Ok, now let’s come to the no no's. The first one is not to give money to children for photographs. It’s important to be a child safe traveller and help create a safe tourism environment for children. Instead of giving money directly to children begging or selling food or souvenirs, support their families and communities or donate to reputable children’s charities. {More information about being a child safe traveller here.}

Another thing would be when you are in religious sites, don't take photos non-stop. It is very easy to go from an observer to an intruder.

Your recently published book ‘Persia to Iran’ looks amazing! What were some of the highlights in putting this collection together?

Yes, I published my first book 'Persia to Iran' last year. It was one of the greatest challenges I have ever experienced in my life.

My 'Persia to Iran' book gave me the opportunity to show what I believed in and brought forward an insight into one of the less understood cultures in this world.

As an archivist and social scientist, I have sound knowledge about history, religious components and demography of this region. But when you want to create a collective with all these elements, extensive research is needed. It took me a good ten months to write the book and design the layout. The book was also reviewed by some of the expert's in their field.

<img alt="St Thaddeus Monastery Northern Iran. Image: Nuran Zorlu

You’ve also got a love of food – what’s the strangest thing you have eaten while travelling?

Food is the great part of any travelling experience. I always like to try local delicacies. I am not only a food lover, but I also cook as well.

I don't know where to start...

How about pork feet soup on 4000mt altitude on Armenia's highest mountain Aragats or barbequed intestines in Istanbul, frog leg noodles in Shanghai's busy markets or snails in a local restaurant in Siem Reap, pig ears in a sleepy town near Granada or roasted sheep head as breakfast in Mashad?

What do you think, are they strange enough? Did I mention, my signature dish is Albanian deep fried lamb liver.

<img alt="Isfahan Butcher. Image: Nuran Zorlu

What can people expect to discover with you on your upcoming trip along the Silk Road in September?

I feel lucky to have had the chance to visit both China's urban and rural corners in the past. This large, culturally rich country has a lot to offer, but to me, a road trip to Eastern China's highly developed regions to the barren ethnically diverse West which is on the ancient Silk Road is one of greatest experiences we can ever have in this country. As this is a new destination for me as well, I am looking forward to photographing and discovering some of the marvels of the world's most populous country too.

The Forbidden City, Beijing. Image: Nuran Zorlu

First of all, The Silk Road is not a single route like California’s Pacific Highway; it is a combination of various land and marital routes which date back to millennia. Before the widespread marine routes established after the 15th century, the land route was the most important for trade and cultural delivery.

Being on the road is an incredible sensation, especially when you are in China. The path we will follow covers more than the half of the Asian Silk Road. From Beijing to Kashgar the distance is around 4500 km (little over the distance between Perth to Sydney.) On this journey, we will experience different cultural elements and diversity of China. There are a few UNESCO heritage sites on our route and we will have a chance to explore some of the least visited corners of the world.

Exploring the Mogao Caves in China. Image: Kate Baker

The Silk Road was not only used for a trade, but lots of ideas also passed through this area as well. We will have a chance see the impact of these ideas on this land, especially as a form of religion. Buddhism and Islam entered China through the Silk Road. Today China is officially a non-religious country, but one of the major branches of Buddhism, Han Buddhism, has integrated to China's culture for millennia.

Mogao caves once preserved some of the oldest Buddhist manuscripts. Today it is like an art gallery unlike any other in the world. The manuscripts are not there anymore, but sculptures and murals are still in their original locations. There are also other sites such as Bingling and Labrang monasteries on our route as well. The later is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery outside of Tibet. It is a living anthropology museum, the monks and locals still conduct their lives as they did 400 years ago.

The Buddhist infusion in this area is so great, but what I want to explore with my fellow travellers the most are the other religious or ethnic components of Western China, The Uighurs and their amazingly photogenic country.

Of course tasting local delicacies is an imperative aspect of visiting traditional communities which this land offers. I always say you can take amazing images to share what you saw, but the taste and smell sensations will only stay with you.

Summer Palace. I will be there to help and guide the participants to develop their technical and artistic styles.

As a social and religious architecture archivist, research is imperative to me. I haven't been to all of these sites but, I know what to look for, and I will find many many more angles the moment I start feeling the place.

Photography is not only a tool to express someone's view of their surroundings, it is also an excellent way to learn new things as well. Personally, I love the epistemology aspect of photography a lot. It helps us to connect and reconnect to our subject, especially if you like to explore culture and history.

My aim for us is to come home with not only a great experience but with a fantastic set of photographs too.

<img alt="Tiger Leaping Gorge, China. What can people look forward to when exploring the marketplace with you?

The markets are probably the most colourful and exciting part of the trip. The world and The Silk Road has changed a lot, but Kashgar Sunday Markets still exist after millennia. Caravans had stopped here before they advanced into Persia or China. Maybe the items, garments or currency has changed, but the importance of this intersection still plays a vital role. Photographing this market, especially the livestock section, will be one of the highlight of this trip.

Join Nuran on China's Silk Road in September 2017

This remarkable 15-day journey takes you along the Chinese part of this ancient route, through ever-changing landscape to the ancient city of Kashgar. In the company of multi award-winning photographer, Nuran Zorlu, you will seek out the best photographic experiences and will not fail to be inspired at every turn. Find out more
2392Cycling Holidays: Pedal & See the Worldhttps://assets.worldexpeditions.com/Blog/PostId/2395/cycling-holidays-see-worldActivities,Cycling,Destinations,Asia,China,Vietnam,Australia, New Zealand & the Pacific,Australia,Sri Lanka,NewsWed, 01 Mar 2017 09:50:00 GMT
Cycling holidays give you the advantage to immerse in a destination with all your senses while also being able to cover longer distances compared to travelling on foot.

Fantastic destinations to explore by bike are the Andes Mountains of Peru, various parts of Vietnam, Costa Rica, Australia's rail trails, and diverse Sri Lanka which is rich in cultural heritage and wildlife.

China is a great place to discover by bike because you can see highlights of the Great Wall, the limestone landscape of Guilin, or the Forbidden City in Beijing. The Asian giant is the world’s top country with the most neighbours (before Russia and Brazil). This gives us, and you, a large variety of options for multi country holidays that include China.

From North to South and East to West, here is an overview of China’s neighbouring countries and the cross-border holidays you can take crossing borders.

North

China, Mongolia & Russia

Hop on a train in Beijing and take a journey crossing several borders that has captured the imagination of travellers for decades. In China, witness the iconic attractions of capital Beijing, cross the Gobi desert to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia and visit the immense steppe for a taste of nomadic life staying in comfortable ‘ger’ camps. After passing the heart of Siberia at Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest and largest freshwater lake, soak up Russia’s vast history as you head to iconic cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, your final stop. The Trans-Siberian train is a fantastic mode of transport for an epic multi country holiday.

Want to cross borders from China into Mongolia and Russia? It removed Russia from the war and brought about the transformation of the Russian Empire into the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), replacing traditional monarchy with the world’s first Communist state. Three years later, China followed in this philosophy although taking a different direction in the 1950s. Today you can travel both countries on the Trans-Siberian Express and see the legacy of communism at sites around the Red Square in Moscow and around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

Want to go on a relatively short multi country holiday to combine Russia and China? Britain had controlled Hong Kong since 1842 and as such the Hong Kong region developed into the global financial centre it is today. Take a multi country holiday to see how Hong Kong compares to the rest of China and travel from Beijing to Hong Kong.
