Zanskar ticks all the boxeshttps://assets.worldexpeditions.com/Blog/PostId/5585/trekking-to-the-zanskar-region-of-ladakhActivities,Adventure Travel,Trekking/Walking,Destinations,Himalaya,Indian HimalayaThu, 28 Dec 2023 23:13:00 GMT
If you're intent on discovering wild and remote lands, then consider a trek in the Zanskar region of the Indian Himalaya, the most isolated region of Ladakh.

If you prefer your treks to offer a truly off-the-beaten-track destination that is unspoiled, offers dramatic and challenging landscapes as well as cultural richness, keep reading.

Where is Zanskar, and why should I visit?

Zanskar is relatively remote and one of the less trekked regions in the Himalaya. Enclosed by spectacular high mountains – including the snow-capped peaks of the Great Himalaya and the rugged Zanskar Range - it sits in the northen part of India, in the region of Ladakh.

The Buddhist region of Zanskar is a Trans Himalayan land, showcasing an ancient Tibetan culture reflected in its exquisite Buddhist monasteries where the turn of the prayer wheel turns in harmony with the seasons and where tiny, whitewashed settlements extend to the borderlands of Tibet.

A trek through Zanskar will introduce you to many remote villages and monasteries where the way of life has been unchanged for generations.

<img alt="Trekking through Zanskar's wild and dramatic landscapes | Garry Weare" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="2897878" dynamiccroppedimage="1" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Zanskar-horses-Garry-2897878-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Zanskar-horses-Garry-2897878-###width###px.jpg" />

When is the best time to visit?

There is a very narrow window of opportunity to trek in Zanskar. In winter, with the exception of the walking down the icebound Zanskar river, the region is isolated, cut off by snow that precludes local people from travelling to other regions of Ladakh for seven months of the year.

Zanskar lies beyond the influence of the Indian monsoon with a trekking season that extends from when the snow melts on the passes in June until the first snows settle on the same passes in late October.

September is the only feasible month to complete treks through the remote and rugged gorges. September is also when the water levels drop, making it possible to undertake the many river crossings required when trekking through Zanskar – and yes, there are many, so come prepared!

<img alt="Hiking through Zanskars wild and rugged mountains | Garry Weare" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="2897980" dynamiccroppedimage="1" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Walking-in-Zanskar-2897980-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Walking-in-Zanskar-2897980-###width###px.jpg" />

Will I see a snow leopard?

In Zanskar’s outlying gorges and passes herds of bharal or blue sheep graze on scant pastures, ibex roam the cliff tops, and brown bears are regularly seen close to many settlements.

As for the elusive snow leopard, the chances of seeing a cat are still on par with winning the lottery. However, due to the good work of the Snow Leopard Conservancy, there is evidence of increasing numbers. Birds of prey are a further attraction. Golden Eagles and lammergeier soar the thermals in search of prey and carrion.

Zanskar's Buddhist legacy

With its deep seated Tibetan traditions, Buddhism defines the high culture of Zanskar.

Ancient monasteries, dating back to the 11th century, located on top of sugarloaf mountains or carved out of precipitous cliff faces characterise this rugged land.

Colourful prayer flags fluttering on the high passes, mani walls – some of the longest in the Himalaya – together with impressive chotens along the trails, add a constant reminder of Zanskar’s enduring Buddhist legacy.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"><img alt="Monks who call the Zanskar region home | Garry Weare" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="2897983" dynamiccroppedimage="1" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Monks-Zanskar-Weare-2897983-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Monks-Zanskar-Weare-2897983-###width###px.jpg" /> <img alt="Chanpa nomads | Garry Weare" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="2897985" dynamiccroppedimage="1" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Jaclyn-Lofts/Garry-Zanskar/Chanpa-nomads-2897985-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Jaclyn-Lofts/Garry-Zanskar/Chanpa-nomads-2897985-###width###px.jpg" /> </carouselsource>

Is it still possible to trek in Zanskar?

Many companies still promote trekking itineraries in Zanskar that follow roads. Since the early 2000s, road developments have completely changed the landscape for those seeking a truly remote trekking experience, and our team has ensured that we have found new, less travelled paths.

The classic treks that extended across Zanskar are now roads. Most of the treks included in Garry Weare’s Lonely Planet Trekking in the Indian Himalaya guide are no longer possible, making it increasingly difficult to devise itineraries that avoid roads, but this shouldn't stop anyone from considering trekking in Zanskar.

<img alt="Zanskar village cut into the side of the mountain | Garry Weare" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="2897986" dynamiccroppedimage="1" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Garry-Zanskar-village-2897986-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Garry-Zanskar-village-2897986-###width###px.jpg" />

Zanskar: the adventurous years – an aside

Ladakh was open to tourists in 1974, and Zanskar two years later. Our experience in the region stems back to this time.

In October 1979, veteran World Expeditions guide, Garry Weare, led the first rafting expedition down the Zanskar to the confluence of the Indus River.

While road development have changed the landscape, it is still possible to enjoy trekking in Zanskar - just come prepared for the challenging terrain and river crossings.

<img alt="Rafting Zanskar gorge, October 1979 | Garry Weare" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="2897987" dynamiccroppedimage="1" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Rafting-Zanskar-gorge-weare-2897987-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Rafting-Zanskar-gorge-weare-2897987-###width###px.jpg" />

All in all, Zanskar is a unique destination that is a must-visit for any adventurer worth their salt. Its spectacular landscape, ancient Tibetan culture, and exotic wildlife make it a perfect destination for trekking enthusiasts.

View all Indian Himalayan treks

5585Summer trekking guide in the Indian Himalayahttps://assets.worldexpeditions.com/Blog/PostId/2468/trekking-in-ladakh-indian-himalayaActivities,Trekking/Walking,Destinations,Himalaya,Indian HimalayaWed, 02 Feb 2022 05:36:00 GMT
The mountains of the Himalaya go beyond the borders of Nepal – and with the summer trekking season upon us from June to September, below are five unique ways to experience the Indian Himalayas on foot.

Traverse the dramatic region of Zanskar

It would be hard to surpass this challenging Trans Himalayan circuit of Ladakh which travels over high passes via ancient trails. Trek through isolated Buddhist villages to reach the secluded Himalayan kingdom of Zanskar.

This part of the Indian Himalaya is known for its rust-coloured mountains, dramatic deep gorges and villages cut off from the outside world for much of the year. Eventually, you will complete your circuit through the Indus Valley for an all-encompassing Himalayan adventure. This Zanskar to Indus Traverse is one to add to your adventure list.

Best time to travel: September

Capture the spirit of trekking in Ladakh

What better introduction to the visually stunning and culturally rich region of Ladakh than trekking through hidden valleys. A land of high passes on the borderlands of Tibet, Ladakh offers timeless landscapes and vistas of spectacular scenery where the snow leopard seeks out the highest ridges at the margins of the season.

Remarkable Buddhist monasteries and ancient forts characterise the rugged region of Ladakh. Think of the striking Tikse Monastery and the historic Stok Palace, to name a few.

Best time to travel: late June and July

Go Beyond the Markha Valley

Also known as ‘Little Tibet,’ this ancient Buddhist enclave on India’s northern border is the highest plateau in Kashmir. Explore on foot the Ladakh heartland, where the flutter of prayer flags and the ancient mani walls reflect the deep seated Buddhist heritage and follow established trails linking whitewashed settlements and tiny monasteries, with spectacular views of the Zanskar Range stretching to the borderlands of the Tibetan Plateau.

Best time to travel: early July and late August to early September

Step into the world of mountaineering

Keen to extend your mountaineering CV? On a high-altitude foray in Ladakh, you can get an ideal (albeit challenging!) introduction to Himalayan climbing.

Within relatively easy distance from each other are the twin peaks of Ladakh: Stok Kangri (6,153m) and Kangyaze Peak (6,400m). You can ascend both of them in one mountaineering holiday and be welcomed by stunning views of the beautiful Markha Valley from their summits.

The region around these peaks offers fantastic mountaineering activities with plenty of high passes to cross. It is home to the world’s highest road of ‘Khardung La,’ filled with trails linking tiny whitewashed settlements and traditional Buddhist monasteries.

Best time to travel: August

<img alt="The surreal beauty of the Indian Himalaya | Brigitte Najjar" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="777460" dynamiccroppedimage="1" flexibleaspectratio="16x7" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Chorten-Ladakh-777460-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Indian-Sub-Continent/Indian-Himalaya/Chorten-Ladakh-777460-###width###px.jpg" />

Remote Ladakh with Garry Weare

If you’re an intrepid traveller who loves to explore the most beautiful, little-visited corners of the Indian subcontinent, join Lonely Planet author Garry Weare to take you there!

Whether this is a first-time trek in Ladakh or an ideal follow up, this new trek from the Nubra to Indus valleys will surpass expectations. You may also be surprised to know that this Indian subcontinent has been attracting large volumes of domestic tourists in the past decade. So why has it been marked as an area of political unrest, and where are the ideal places to visit?

Himalayan adventurer and author Garry Weare – who led his first trek in Kashmir in 1973 and has since trekked well over 25,000km in the Indian Himalaya – breaks down the facts and shares why this is a destination he loves returning to.

A place where few foreigners go

The legendary Vale of Kashmir in the midst of the snow-capped Himalaya has captured the imagination of the Moghuls, the British and, more recently in the 1970's and 80’s, by foreign travellers keen to stay on the renowned houseboats and to trek the unsurpassed Himalayan mountain trails. They came in their throngs.

The outbreak of political unrest in 1990, however, brought tourism to a grinding halt for the best part of a decade and it was not until the early 2000’s that tourists have gradually returned.

Bustling life on Dal Lake, Kashmir. World Expeditions chooses below five fascinating Himalaya trekking trails where most other travellers don’t go…

Sikkim Bhutan Trek

A spectacular trek in the Kanchenjunga region of Sikkim combined with a cultural tour in Bhutan

©Liz Light

Cross verdant yak grazing pastures, follow trails through magnificent rhododendron forests and camp beneath the magnificent backdrop of Kangchenjunga, once considered the highest mountain in the world. Trekking this exhilarating trail between Sikkim and Bhutan takes you to visit the renowned hill station of Darjeeling in the Indian Himalayas. This part of the famous mountain range is less developed and consequently less travelled. After the 7-day trek through Sikkim, why not travel to Bhutan for an insight in the Kingdom’s rich Buddhist cultural heritage!

Level of trekking: introductory to moderate

Best time to go trekking: April & October

Zanskar to Indus Traverse

An epic trek through an ancien Himalayan landscape

Photo ©HikeBikeTravel

Zanskar is one of the last truly remote regions in the Himalaya, where villages are cut off from the outside world for much of the year due to heavy snowfall and blocked mountain passes. The region is also known for its rust coloured mountains and dramatic deep gorges – a vast, silent and truly spectacular wilderness, that leads to the whitewashed settlements of the upper Markha Valley. Our Zanskar to Indus Traverse follow ancient trails leading over high passes that link isolated Buddhist villages to the secluded Himalayan kingdom of Zanskar.

Level of trekking: challenging

Best time to go trekking: September

Rara Lake & Yari Valley

Explore Rara National Park (area of outstanding natural beauty) and cross the Great Himalaya to the Tibetan border

The trail from Dolpo in Nepal is still a regular trading route for Nepalese and Tibetans and leads straight to the largest lake in Nepal, Rara. From here you can reach Humla, the largest and most remote district of Nepal. To get there, you’ll first cross the Great Himalaya Range and Karnali River. Trekking in this far-west region of Nepal is like stepping back in time to when the first Europeans began exploring the Himalaya (remember “Seven Years in Tibet”?). Locals will greet you with genuine curiosity and we’re convinced that you'll enjoy these interactions in a part of the Himalayas that very few westerners make the effort to visit.

Extra fun fact: this Himalaya trekking route marks the end of a remarkable and very rare journey across the entire length of the Nepal GHT (Great Himalaya Trail).

Level of trekking: challenging

Best time to go trekking: July

Journey to Mount Kailash

Explore Kailash, the most sacred mountain in the Himalaya, during the Saga Dawa festival, and experience the traditional culture of sacred Tibet

Far away in the Tibetan Himalayas stands Mount Kailash. It is said to be the mythical Mount Meru - the centre of the universe. To reach the sacred mountain, you must take a weeklong journey from Tibet’s capital Lhasa. This on its own is already a route not travelled by many others, but you can take remote touring in the Himalaya a step further! Join Buddhist pilgrims on a 3-day mountain trekking tour around Mount Kailash. This Himalaya trekking route is without doubt one of the world's most compelling adventures.

Even better: we plan to reach Mount Kailash at the time of the Saga Dawa festival when many thousands of pilgrims from throughout Tibet gather to pay homage to the mountain.

Level of trekking: moderate

Best time to go trekking: June

Gokyo & the Renjo La

Avoid the historic route to see ‘more’ of Everest

The world’s highest mountain has become a mainstream climbing destination in the recent years, with more and more people following the historic trekking route to the Everest Base Camp. If you like to walk a more remote trail instead, and fully appreciate the majesty of Mount Everest, head west, towards the Gokyo Lakes. Trekking slowly through Sherpa villages and yak pastures, not only will you avoid the busier trails of this Himalaya trekking icon but you will gain stunning panoramic views as well. The Gokyo & Renjo La trek follows the quietest corner of Everest and weaves its way to the top of the 5,400m Renjo La pass. The irony? You get to see much ‘more’ of the Everest summit compared to the Base Camp Trek, as you are not that close!

Level of trekking: moderate to challenging

Best time to go trekking: September to May

Besides these 5 Himalaya trekking routes, we have other trips in our offer that go trekking in the remote corners of the Himalaya as well. If you like to learn more about how to get away from the crowds on you next Himalaya trekking holiday, please have a look at the above five options, or get in touch with our team of travel experts around the world.
23628 places in India you simply can't misshttps://assets.worldexpeditions.com/Blog/PostId/2347/8-places-in-india-you-cant-missAdventure Travel,Destinations,Indian Subcontinent,India,ActivitiesThu, 04 Aug 2016 06:27:00 GMT
Both confronting yet stimulating, whilst peaceful and inspiring, it's the contrasts that make India so special.

A melting pot of vibrant cultures and traditions, diverse landscapes and breathtaking architecture - there are endless things to see and do in India. You could lose yourself discovering the world-renowned textiles, fragrant spices and intricate handicrafts in the bustling markets, delving into the mouthwatering flavours of one of the world's greatest cuisines, or exploring the exquisitely designed temples and palaces. People watching is always a lot of fun too!

With so many fascinating and captivating places to visit in India, it can be hard narrowing down an itinerary, particularly if it's your first time travelling to India. To help make it easier, we've come up with eight places in India that you simply cannot afford to miss. Some in the North and some in the South, we hope this inspires your next India adventure!

1. Agra – Home of the The Taj Mahal

Agra is well known to be the home of the Taj Mahal – one of the Seven Wonders of the World and arguably one of the most beautiful buildings on Earth. Towering grandly and ever so elegantly over the bank of the Yamuna River, this delicate and intricately designed grand marble ivory-white mausoleum lives up to all its talked up to be and leaves few disappointed.

Whilst many visit Agra on a day trip to see the Taj Mahal alone and are on their way to their next destination soon after, there is more to Agra that people give it credit for. The Mughal Empire has left a wonderful fort and numerous captivating mausoleums and tombs. The Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah also known as the ‘Baby Taj’, is an exquisite tomb that is also worthwhile a visit in Agra. Less crowded and just as elegantly designed as Taj itself, it is well worth spending some time wondering through this tomb, appreciating the fine architecture, without the masses of people. You could spend several days visiting these monuments, as well as navigating your way through the lively marketplaces.

However, do be aware that with the flocks of tourists drawn to the Taj, comes many street sellers, rickshaw wallahs, touts and ‘fake’ guides which can get tiresome at times. All in all, Agra, is a must-see city in India, even if it is just for the Taj Mahal.

How to see it now

Tick Agra and the Taj Mahal off your bucket list on our five-day India’s Golden Triangle, where you will spend the morning at the Taj Mahal watching the sunrise as well as visit the Agra Fort, ‘the Baby Taj’ and participate in a marble inlay workshop.

2. Jaipur – The Pink City

Jaipur was founded by Maharake Jai Singh in the early 18th century and is known as the “Pink City of India” - the gateway and capital to India’s most flamboyant state, Rajasthan. You will soon see why as you drive through the bustling city with almost every wall painted the colour pink, which was done to welcome Prince Edward VII and Queen Victoria in 1876. Jaipur is a delightful city, and is somewhat calmer than chaotic Delhi (but still pretty crazy!).

A big draw card to visit Jaipur is the historic fort-palace Amber Fort, nestled among the Aravalli Hills. Built in the 1600 by Raja Man Singh, this stunning fort will take your breath away! You could spend hours wondering through this fort marveling at the intricate and elaborate details in the buildings décor as well as enjoy learning about the story of the kingdom.

Another highlight of Jaipur is the decadent and magnificent City Palace which includes a huge complex of courtyards, gardens and buildings that are a fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture, as well as a fascinating City Palace museum.

With it’s beautiful forts and palaces, Jaipur is sure to be a city that won’t disappoint!

How to see it now

Visit the highlights of Jaipur on our Classic North India trip where we will spend two days in Jaipur including time at Amber Fort, the City Palace museum full of fascinating ancient artifacts and Jai Singh’s Observatory. This trip is the perfect for those who want to soak up the biggest highlights of North India.

Amber Fort

3. Alleppey - peaceful Kerala Backwaters

If you have been travelling through North India, then the South of India, and in particular Kerala’s backwaters, comes as a welcomed break. These beautiful, picturesque backwaters must not be missed for those travelling in South India, and travel in all directions from the city of Alleppey (or Alappuzha), the hub of the surrounding backwaters.

The main attraction of the backwaters are the houseboats (also known as kettuvallams), with more than 2000 houseboats floating down the river. The kettuvallams were originally used as grain barges but have since been transformed into floating cottages – some being quite luxurious!

Alleppey itself is graceful and greenery-fringed, and is a watery world of villages, punted canoes, shops and many houseboats. Float along the backwaters and gaze over the vibrant green rice paddies, observe the village life, enjoy the mesmerizingly beautiful and relaxing experience and unwind from the chaos the rest of India brings.

How to see it now

There is no better way to visit Kerala than spending the night cruising peacefully down the backwaters on a traditional houseboat on our Highlights of Kerala trip. This relaxed introduction to the charming and diverse state of Kerala, after sightseeing in Cochin, allows you to soak up the lush tropical scenery and get a close-up glimpse of village life as you float down the backwaters.

4. Varanasi - the holy city

Varanasi will be like no other city you have ever been to before – at the same time as being completely mind-boggling and chaotic on a whole new level, it is one incredibly fascinating and compelling place. Home to the famous River Ganges, an important centre of the Hindu universe, where many pilgrims come to wash away their sins or cremate their loves ones in the sacred waters. With public rituals of life and death, Varanasi is certainly not for the faint-hearted, although overwhelming it’s a city that is definitely worth a visit.

A walk along the ghats and a boat ride or evening ceremony is something to remember forever, as you watch Hindu pilgrims bathing in the waters of the sacred River Ganges, a ritual that washes away ones sins. It is also an auspicious place to die, as those who do are released from the cycle of rebirth. Spending time on the ghats is a moving experience like no other, and is something that will leave you in awe and complete fascination.

With scenes that may shock or inspire, and with a bustling chaos in the heart of the city like-no-other, Varanasi is a place of such cultural and spiritual significance that you simply must see it to believe it.

How to see it now

Spend two days in this holy city, on our 22-day North India in Depth trip, a cultural journey which will bring the complex history of the extraordinary country to life. In Varanasi you will have the opportunity to visit Sarnath, which is a major centre for Buddhism in India, full of monasteries and magnificent stupas. Arrive at the Ganges by dawn and be awed as you witness pilgrims bathing and praying in the city ghats at sunrise. End the day on the ghats being blown away by an evening performance of traditional music and dance.

5. Delhi - a melting pot of the old and new

For most people, Delhi is their first taste of India when they exit the airport and have to navigate their way through the chaotic traffic to their hotel. Past the mayhem of India’s capital, which is home to a population of 25 million people – is a maze of mega malls, bustling markets, colonial buildings, Mughal mausoleums and fascinating relics of ancient empires.

Whilst some are underwhelmed by Delhi, if it’s given a chance, Delhi’s hidden corners will give you the most rewarding and memorable experiences. These might be wandering through the winding streets of the walled city of Old Delhi and marvelling at the remains of what once was the capital of the Mughals, filled with mansions, elegant mosques and gardens. There is something quaint and charming about the crumpling walls and chipped paint of what was once a grand building. Enjoy a free lunch and a sip of chai at a Sikh Temple and this will top off your day meandering through the organised chaos.

Along with exploring Old Delhi, there are many beautiful sights in Delhi which could take a good few days to see. You may even need a second visit to see all the monuments in Dehli. Some places of interest include the majestic Humayun’s Tomb, the old military barraks Red Fort, Jama Masjid (India’s largest mosque) and Mehrauli Archaeological Park (often overlooked by tourists).

How to see it now

Our Rajasthan Cycle tour combines the “Golden Triangle” cities of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur with a wildlife-safari in Sariska Tiger Reserve and stop over at the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, perfect for travellers who would like to tick the big cities off their bucket list and see some wildlife too. Explore key monuments including the Taj Mahal, City Palace, the Jantar Mantar and the magnificent Red Fort. The cycling route follows the old road that was once a merchant route between the princely state of Alwar and Jaipur.

6.
