Trip highlights

  • Install cook stoves to make life changing improvements for local villagers
  • Help a village in a remote corner of the beautiful Sacred Valley
  • Gain an intimate insight into the fascinating Andean culture
  • Work alongside the people of Huilloc village
  • See local women give a weaving demonstration

Huilloc is located in a remote corner of the Sacred Valley, a 25-minute drive from Ollantaytambo, in a district known for its customary traditions of back strap weaving. The community is home to 200 families. The households rely on wood to burn in their rudimentary open fire cook stoves. The cook stoves produce a thick smoke that hangs in the air, trapped within the confines of the small kitchens. Mostly it’s the women and children who inhale the smoke during meal preparation, spending up to eight hours a day in the kitchen. According to the World Health Organization the inhalation of indoor smoke has been linked to pneumonia in children, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, low birth weight babies and lung cancer. The World Expeditions Foundation will raise funds to facilitate the installation of healthy cook stoves into Huilloc kitchens. This is an opportunity for you and your travelling companion/s (minimum of 2 travellers required) to work alongside the Huilloc community to install these healthy cook stoves. You will stay in local homestays, our cook will prepare all the meals while you are at Huilloc and the local community will warmly welcome you. The local women will give a weaving demonstration and the local men will show us how they tend to the fields and pay respect to pachamama (earth mother).

This morning we transfer by private vehicle to the village of Huilloc (2 hr drive). Upon arrival in Huilloc we are greeted by the community and watch a traditional weaving demonstration and learn about the subsistence lifestyle of the community. We are shown the traditional cook stoves in place in the homes and experience first hand the smoke that is produced by the current cook stoves. We next meet the recipients of the new cook stoves that we will install in the coming days. After lunch we begin the installation of the first cook stove. Overnight Huilloc - Guesthouse.

Meals:  L,D

Today we spend the full day installing cook stoves. The materials and equipment will be onsite when we arrive and the old cook stoves demolished. The group will be divided into groups of two-three people to work on each cook stove. There will be a local expert on hand to oversee the installations. It is estimated that each cook stove will take 3 hours to install. The cook stoves need to set for a period of 3 days before they can be rendered for use. Overnight in Huilloc - Guesthouse
